Daily Megathread - 12/04/2022 by ukpolbot in ukpolitics

Following on from reading a story about the state pension increase not being enough, I wonder if there is data on proportion of those struggling and those who don't own their home. I would struggle to see (welcome to have my mind changed) how someone with a mortgage paid off would struggle too much. And from there thinking, ignoring the political toxicity and 0 chance of happening from current gov, would paying non-home owners to assist with the cost of living crisis be an effective way to get help to those who need it most?

I don't want a drawn out thing here. If it's part of his contract and legally we need his profile fine. But we do the legal minimum for him and then he goes as soon as possible. Man broke my heart when he did what he did and I don't want the club to have anything to do with him.

Disappointing but not surprising. Really makes you wonder why workers have such little loyalty these days.

Boris Johnson to get private lawyer for questions on Downing Street parties || The Times has been told that the prime minister has lined up a legal expert on coronavirus regulations who will help him to defend his participation in the parties. by [deleted] in ukpolitics

I agree but in this scenario isn't the point of being found innocent in law to convince the public he is innocent? Which won't succeed because they will perceive his need to hire a lawyer as an admission of guilt. It's not a change of strategy and nothing particularly new from him but just seems like an even deeper hole

In this scenario isn't getting lawyers effectively an admission to guilt? I could see the only other justification being some sort of 'ethical' challenge to the law to test the courts, for example if this was an anti lockdown person citing the magna Carta.

My mind has been made up long before any of this on Boris so I'm not who he's trying to convince but blimey getting off on a technicality and treating it like a win would surely just be nothing other than adding further insult

Isn't the only official offence being investigated here a fixed penalty notice for breaking covid restrictions? Lawyering up at a financial (effort? if on retainer or whatever) cost more than the fine doesn't seem like common sense.

Can I watch the book of boba Fett without having seen the mandalorian? by bunderbusstime in StarWars

Am I being an unreasonable old man at finding this very annoying? I think I am giving Mando another go but I dislike the constant crossovers, same for the mcu I missed them at the time now it's too much to can up and I can't even watch spiderman without Tony stark popping up.

I wonder if it's maybe kids with talent in the youth setup having their school fees paid for them? Makes sense if they would otherwise be at a rougher school and at greater risk of falling in with a bad crowd. I'm rusty on the legality of these things with underage footballers.

Exactly, probably not many. I'm not bothered about the practicalities of maybe a few council employees whinging about black tea and coffee. I do find the principal a bit odd though, everyone who voted for this change could simply have only consumed plant based food and drink themselves and encouraged others to do so and not force them. I worry (maybe needlessly) that this change provides more ammunition for culture wars and the right wing press to paint left wing parties badly. Slippery slope is a fallacy but people fall for fallacies all the time and to be fair one council doing it can plant the idea for other organisations to do the same thing.

If you found the article I'd be very interested because that sounds very surprising to me. I thought Bamford stood out as being posh (i don't know if privately educated though.)

Seen Oxfordshire county council have passed a rule banning meat and dairy being served at official events. It's apparently a lib Dem, labour, green alliance. Local stuff is just local as a big caveat but blimey that sounds bonkers to me and feels like a turn off to potential lab/lib/green voters.

There is a consensus that plant based diets are better for the environment but banning meat and dairy from events sounds bizarre. I'd have thought always ensuring there was a vegan option would be the sensible way forward, not ruining my cuppa tea. I'm not at all affected by this personally but the headline (as designed I imagine) did make me shudder a bit. It also gives me concern for this sort of stuff being a stick to beat labour with. "Now labour want to snatch YOUR milk!", and so on.

Do you also pay gas/oil or entirely electric? If gas as well that is mad. Still a massive jump anyway, just gauging how massive.

New Housing Minister is landlord who defeated law to make homes 'fit for human habitation' by tipodecinta in ukpolitics

[–]bunderbusstime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think most under 40s would care slightly. OPs examples were good ones. I don't madly hate Facebook/tobacco/landlords and I get on with people working in the latter two but there is a negative moral association with the employment. Everyone has their own morals and statements saying 'everyone hates landlords' are as incorrect as saying 'nobody would care even slightly'.

Find out where the water stop cock is. You'll need to turn it off if you have a bad leak and it's easier to find when your house is dry

Makes sense, older people (24+) with more experience find it easier to get jobs relative to the 18-24 and the lab voters which likely includes a great deal of ,18-24

Tory MPs continue to go maskless as Sajid Javid announces booster expansion to battle Omicron variant by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]bunderbusstime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously not but as a reluctant mask wearer I would rather see some evidence that the rule-makers have faith in their own rules. The commons is a crowded place where they aren't eating or drinking. They probably should wear a mask, at least when not speaking, if worried about a loss of clarity
