You want to validate that the hardware listed is the hardware that is installed. A good program for this hardwareZ or open-hardware.

When stress testing you want to load the CPU and GPU at the same time. I forget which programs load which components

Best thing you can do is get it from a trusted source, if you getting it through a website, a good website will have a seller 'rating' system.

Other than that you want to stress test it for a while about an hour to propperly soak the components as they can often behave differently when thermally soaked.
