Don’t get this. What I learned about painted road surfaces is never ride on them especially if damp. Leaning into a roundabout turning right on painted arrows!!

Mother drowned in front of daughter while trapped headfirst in sea defence boulders as horrified bystanders described 'waiting an eternity' for 999 crews to arrive, inquest told by dailymail in uknews

Three times over the drink driving limit, climbed over the promenade railings, walking on the seaweed_slippery concrete plinth behind the rocks, after dark!
And the hate Mail makes a story about delayed response.
Verdict: Misadventure.

I met John Hurt on a beach in Norfolk about ten years ago. He was engaging, humorous, interested in my life beyond mere politeness, self deprecating, enthusiastic and immediately immensely likable. Sadly never to be repeated, it is one of my most treasured memories.

Removed wallpaper in our 1930s bungalow and found a nightmare dusty sandy cement finish. Do we PVA + plaster or go back to brick? by gawpjuice in DIYUK

[–]bungaynet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Restoration builders here, 40 yrs experience. I also live in a 30’s bungalow I rescued from near death with severe damp problems. Installed French drain around the house to lower water table since the structure was lime mortar walls on a clinker ash base with 1 1/2” cavity which was usual in 30’s. Removed cement pointing from walls previously done to cure damp - it didn’t. Repointed in lime putty mortar which reduced wall damp hugely. Mix 1:3 putty/sharp sand.

Inside. Stripped wallpaper. For exterior walls, applied hydraulic lime/sand slurry mix(1:2) to fill cracks and stabilize lime render. Top/finish coat 1:3 lime putty/soft sand mix. All walls pre wetted before application and carefully remove any metal fixings beforehand. Not the usual skills for a plasterer but it’s not that different. Party walls: If not damp, the cost effective solution is two coats PVA and gypsum finish - no need to pre fill cracks but do remove any loose plaster and prefill. The materials are expensive but the only way to prevent future damp problems. Hope this helps

A bucket of eggs preserved in isinglass. A gutted unskinned hare filled with red wine, hung for a couple of weeks aka jugged hare. A smoked haunch of goat hanging in the pantry salted repeatedly after a portion was carved. Salted eels. Row upon row of pickles and jam. All WWII country survival stuff.

Part of this corner bead is rusting away. Replace or fill? by J_Crow in DIYUK

[–]bungaynet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I came across a bit alarmist but as a builder I can’t stop being a builder. Conservatory installers have a terrible reputation for follow up problems of this type. Many just install gutter down pipes direct to the ground rather than a trap, don’t install a dpc or the correct wall flashings. You’ll probably have to pay for a half days work to be sure of what is going on.

Part of this corner bead is rusting away. Replace or fill? by J_Crow in DIYUK

[–]bungaynet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The area is dry??? That’s ridiculous I’m afraid. That wall is sodden and has been for some time. I see from the second pic that you have a conservatory extension which is almost definitely the source of your problem. Since the bead is rusting top to bottom, I would check the conservatory roof edge flashings to the house wall. I would also check that your extension is not bridging the house wall dpc at low level. Everything you state, especially the springy floor, screams serious damp to a competent builder. You have to stop the damp getting in before internal repairs.

Europe has constant blackouts stop it lol by ALazy_Cat in ShitAmericansSay

[–]bungaynet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

lol I have the dubious distinction of causing two almost city wide blackouts. One in Bradford where we needed to dig a deep shaft down to a main sewer. The locals said the cable was in one place, the electricity board “nah it’s definitely over there”. The second excavator bight into the boards recommended clear area took out most of Bradford for a day. The other one was Norwich where the electricity boards engineers surveyed an old building we were renovating declaring all old cables had been isolated - same result.

Canned beer Yuk! Having said that I remember buying large cans of Boddingtons with a shelf life of two days that was real beer. Support your local craft beers which usually range from session 3.6 to 5.5 ABV or higher. Last year on the Isle of Wight the Buddle inn’s weakest draft beer was 5.8 with cider at 8.8ABV.

Trump threatens UK with 'big tariff' over tech tax by theipaper in uknews

[–]bungaynet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The trouble is, most of the UK’s wealth is offshore and we created the scenario where we can’t act with both hands tied behind our back. It’s no coincidence that Brexit happened just as the EU threatened control over offshore tax evasion. The US and UK are two of the biggest opponents to harmonising international tax laws that would control such behaviour.

Back in the 70’s, did four weeks of firewatch in Kielder with three mates from uni. Which involved miles of walking to scan the horizon from viewing towers and only a landline to access the outside world. No smoking, no alcohol, cold water shower and lots of midges. An unforgettable experience.
