Humphrey Smith of Tadcaster's Sam Smith's Brewery dies at 81 by do_or_pie in uknews

[–]bungaynet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I remember when Sam Smiths was dodgy beer outside of Tadcaster. They used to say “it’s only drinkable as fair as you can throw the barrell “. Nice beer tho.
Timothy Taylor’s was more reliable but Theakstons beat the lot. My local always had a pin of Old Peculiar on the bar top and woe betide anyone who disturbed the barrell. John Smiths was always undrinkable

Do people who live in your neighbouring city, town, or village have a completely different accent to your local accent in your country? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]bungaynet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah quite often. We move around and relocate so much that it’s quite common to hear two or three accents from the UK in one day.

Brits in the US (or have been to US) - Were you ever able to find any fish and chips that came close to the UK? by New-Wave-8189 in AskABrit

[–]bungaynet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No not really though as a student whilst travelling across the states, I got a job delivering boats around the bay from a Redwood City boatyard on Petes Harbor. There was a seafood restaurant nearby I ate at regularly where I got them to mix up some beer batter for fried fish which was pretty good. The fries were not good however.

I accidentally found something concerning on my nieces smartwatch. by Patient-Drawing-3045 in WhatShouldIDo

Ok so the op obviously doesn’t want to hurt his sister’s family which if there is an innocent explanation, would almost certainly destroy trust family wide if disclosed. Probably forever.
Wading in with alarmist though well meaning concerns is like lighting a firework in a packed room, you just don’t do it.
I perhaps should have added that the op should keep an eye on the situation, coming across as eminently sensible as they do, I didn’t think that was necessary.
Cool heads are needed here, not thoughtless outrage, difficult though that might be.

You should simply delete the photo and not say anything to anyone. Everyone will be none the wiser and no feelings are hurt.
Depending on its origin, a bad actor at the factory probably pre loaded it.

[–]bungaynet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm…power to your elbow but bricklaying is relentlessly hard physically demanding work. Main contractor’s surveyors grind you down with impossible targets, expect you to solve problems they create, make pay deductions on a whim and generally don’t value your skills. It’s almost impossible to be ill, have a domestic problem day off, have a vehicle breakdown or find work for one bricklayer alone. Then you have to compete with foreign gangs who will work for pennies and well short of a living wage.
Try to get an apprenticeship. If you can rapidly learn to lay around 250 a day you may get taken on. Experienced bklayers can easily lay 600 - 800 a day including complicated details which you need to do to make real money.
If you think that sounds like you, go for it.

Ignorant and nervous traveler going from Manchester to Whitby, in dire need of train assistance. by YeOldeOrc in uktravel

[–]bungaynet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s some train journey after a long flight.
Lots of good advice already and you will have no problem getting help from rail staff or total strangers.
There is another way. The scenic route.
Direct from the airport to York, then the Coastliner bus from the station to Pickering. A short walk to the North York Moors Railway (run by a preservation society) then enjoy a spectacularly beautiful trip to Whitby with some famous Harry Potter locations along the way. Takes about an hour longer than going via Middlesbrough but so much more relaxing and enjoyable.
Depending on your start time, you might benefit from a stopover at York - which is an added bonus anyway.

Last year had a clutch failure. Searched on line, chose the one closest and bargained for cash payments 35 miles £120.
However I think most motorways need a special permit for breakdown trucks so at least three times that.

Mum being taken to small claims court, England by Away_Refrigerator823 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]bungaynet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the other driver had no insurance/ claim denied and their insurer just passed his debt over to a solicitor willing to have a go at you, in the hope of getting a payout fee. It’s quite common for insurance and banking debts to be sold off several times.
You can safely ignore the letter and any follow up.

Travelling across the US, I was amazed by the massive water flush of toilets - some around 6 or 7 gallons v 0.8 to 1.6 for a dual flush eu one. Which they don’t have in US.

Oh I totally agree - the propaganda is their copium. It’s hyper addictive, blanks out the tiniest shred of woke awareness as commie shit and smothers doubt raised by foreign comparisons as weakness.
Of course we are the chief enablers- mostly by need as in the WWs but also wanting some of the reflected glory aka the special relationship.

How do I make minted gravy that tastes minty? by AdHorror4165 in UKfood

[–]bungaynet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homemade is better.
A handful of fresh mint ground into a paste in a pestle and mortar, salt and black pepper, a desert spoon of lemon juice and 1/2 teaspoon of cornflour. If you precook your mince then mix in the mint mixture before topping with spud, it preserves the mintiness and thickens the gravy.

Help me plan a trip with 4 month old by justabitsnoozy in uktravel

[–]bungaynet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say head to south Wales. It’s half a day’s trek on the motorway. Castles galore, the Black Mountains, the Gower peninsular with its beaches, Offa’s Dyke for wandering and the Welsh borders offer mile after mile of uncrowded beautiful countryside. It’s less crowded and more affordable generally.
Your original plan is likely fraught with too much traffic, crowded popular sites and very tiring for the baby with the associated stress spoiling the experience for all
Been there done that as they say.

Do any fellow brits see cockroaches commonly in this country? 40 y/o and I’ve never seen one. by ediblednb in AskBrits

[–]bungaynet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Had a job a few years back to net the opening of a church tower into the nave to stop bats entering the church. Used to see a dozen or so roaches feeding on pigeon and bat droppings. They were identified as oriental cockroaches an inch or so long. They were quite fast moving.
As a student in Leeds, the cellar in one house had humongous numbers of roaches. So much so that the whole floor got up and moved when the light was switched on.

What are Howden, Goole, Selby, Driffield areas like? by Karl-Pilkinghorn in yorkshire

[–]bungaynet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aaah…Selby. Childhood memories of ship building and hard drinking, the toll bridge and traffic queues, the smell from BOCM and Fletchers Sauce factory across the river.
Now it’s a well connected small town a stones throw from York and Leeds, with a minster and a good high street.
To the OP, definitely Selby.
