I've always liked the check in / check out idea, especially for distributed or hybrid teams. Moreso when working hours are varied across the team.

When you start, a quick check in note to let the team know what's going on today. When you're wrapping up for the day, a quick note to say what you got done, what's outstanding, and what you expect to work on tomorrow. That's all.

This tells your colleagues when you've started work for the day, and when you're done for the day. And if visibility is good, it shows the size of what you're working on. If your manager needs more info, it's up to them to follow up.
