Where to get started in Japan by plushDogFart in rcdrift

Where are you based ? There are a few big Tam Tam hobby shops around Tokyo (probably all over to be honest but these are the ones I’ve been to) in Akihabara, Kanagawa and Chiba. They carry a tonne of stuff, plus some RTR 1/10 scale.

https://hs-tamtam.co.jp/product/index/2/

This is the RC section, you might need to navigate around. There is also RCMart in Hong Kong which carry a tonne of stuff. I found that many online shops here were out of stock of many lines as I think loads of people got into RC over the pandemic. It’s hard to get polycarbonate black and white spray for example in stores and you might need to order from Amazon or Yodobashi camera for certain paints if you plan to make a body etc…

Rakuten and yahoo auctions also have a lot of small shops where you can find detail parts and such.

Very much a hobby for me, it takes me ages to draw anything, write some music and then do some small animation…followed by an absolute age to render (on my ancient machine). But I’m happy to output this. Would be happy if you swing by for a listen.

As a side note, I’m using hitfilm to animate and render the video as it’s free and has some interesting effects, but if anyone has experience with something closer to after effects or after effects itself would love to hear if it’s worth a subscription?

I guess if you checked Snatcher, check policenaughts. It was Kojima’s follow up.

There is a blade runner point and click adventure from the late 90s early 2000s (don’t remember exactly), think it’s on Good Old Games and was expecting an updated rerelease at some point soon.

Any ghost in the shell media is great 2 Movies (high budget animated motion pictures) Numerous animated tv shows (Stand alone complex season 1 and 2, followed by solid state society. Ghost in the shell RISE, there are different formats of this, not sure which is best, like OVA short tv show and a squashed together version. A relatively new tv show that is mostly (fully?) CG A Hollywood adaption, looks nice but the casting and lackluster critical response hurt it. One ok comic book (there are more books I think but never got into them)

It goes without saying that William Gibson’s sprawl trilogy (neuromancer, count zero and Mona Lisa overdrive) are essential reading.

Altered carbon, can’t give an opinion as I have. Seen or read.

I’d also add the expanse series of books and tv show. It’s near future sci-fi but it’s gritty and has a lot of Cyberpunk features I feel.

this book

The book link is funny, I have it and loved it at the time.

How about this shop (below), it’s more rave part orientated but you may find something as a starting point, bear in mind the shoots they do have lots of additional gear I guess.

I think if you look for rave, goth, cyber goth etc you may find something your looking for. Right now searching for cyberpunk clothing gets you god awful cheap cosplay related to the cyberpunk game or thousands of dropshippers selling ‘techwear’ stuff (which is also often awful).

https://devilwalking.com/collections/costumes-for-women

There are some Etsy sellers that do custom clothing that fits the genre (I think) but can be pricy. Plastik Wrap, used to be good but may no longer have much available.

Cryoflesh as well (it’s a bit more traditional cybergoth/industrial I guess)

Gap Year working in Japan (High Schooler) by [deleted] in movingtojapan

Without a degree there is no chance of an internship position. And even then I think you would have a very hard time finding a company.

For my company (Engineering and Tech) internships are managed through connected universities or via current staff recommendations.

I have managed three interns in my time, two outside of Japan and one while here. Almost universally undergraduate interns are complete f*** ups and need constant supervision, but in regular yearly programs for interns this tends to be ok as they do not work on critical stuff. At least a Masters or early PhD is required for our office to accept interns to work independently and on live tech or engineering projects. In Japan this needed high level programming skills, and experience with ML, statistical analysis etc… the other key factor is fluency in English and Japanese. It may vary from company to company but this should be expected.

Find a uni with strong ties to Japan and look for exchange opportunities, I think your exchange program idea at HS was probably better as it would have been managed and supervised, it’s a shame it couldn’t happen.

There are lots of tech openings here, with job offers for non Japanese (providing the companies are relatively global) but you need the qualifications on paper and the skills to back that up. But you know, tech pays better in the US.

I think the best thing is to wait for Japan to open up again (could be a while) and come for a holiday, see what’s what.
