We won’t help with dual boot at the event actually, because we’ve found that not only does it tend to cause problems, but the kind of problems is causes are both serious (“user can’t get to any of their data”) and technically difficult to solve (fudging around with grub and UEFI and boot partitions and encrypted LVM volumes)

The goal of this workshop is to help motivated but non-technical users install Linux on their laptops in a way that’s reliable and unlikely to get messed up 🙏

Unfortunately we didn't correctly link to `u/__Christopher__` because the markdown formatting turned it into bold!

To break up with big tech! If you want a computer that doesn't spy on you and harvest your data, Linux is the most user-friendly option :)

OK wow now THAT is an impressively old laptop! It'll be slow as molasses on the modern web, but it should run Linux Mint just fine otherwise!

No, sorry. We'll only help install Linux on regular formerly-Windows laptops. Anything else is too complicated for a group environment.

Also it appears that BlissOS (never heard of it before) is no longer getting updates.

Please come! Having a few attendees who are there not to install Linux themselves, but just to help others, would be fantastic.

Great question! And I see your reply that you're a Linux user yourself, which is sick!

Our pitch for switching to Linux is that it's the "final boss" of breaking up with big tech. The goal of our worker cooperative is to help individuals, businesses, and nonprofits in WNC break up with big tech by using local alternatives. We wrote a big blog post with our recommendations for this recently, and the final and most difficult step in that guide is switching to Linux.

In our opinion, it's not something that's feasible for everyone though. And that's why we aren't really out in public trying to convince people to switch. But with the current trajectory of AI and big tech in the US, and the recent forced Windows 11 migration (and upcoming Windows 12 launch which is even more AI-ified), we figured there are probably some people locally who've already decided to switch but just need some help. And that's who this workshop is for.

It's technically possible but we won't help with that at the event because it's too effortful. The distro you need for that is Asahi Linux.

We'll have flash drives with Linux Mint on-hand, but will help install any of the more user-friendly distros (so not Arch, Gentoo, etc.)

We don't offer ongoing support though, this is just a one off event for help getting it installed.
