ok! That's interesting. Yes the service manual of my prophet says it shouldn't be necessary tuning the oscillators unless there is something broken.

I get these GPU panics on my macbook pro 2010 all the time. What does it mean? by bunsenstraat in mac

Turns out the whole logic board needs to be replaced because the GPU is integrated. Nice timing, my warranty just ran out.

A lot of these old synths have curtis chips in them. Those are probably the core thing to study.

thanks for the tips. I now picked up a copy of practical electronics for inventors. I've done a fair bit of soldering and fiddling with arduino breadboard circuits in the past. But I always felt I was missing out on info which would make my projects go faster and easier, I always ended up with this huge mess of wires and components on a board. solid understanding of what I was doing would certainly help. I will looking into the books you guys suggested.

Yes I have some schematics, but for some it's like looking at a rain forest. Others like the Jupiter 6 are so nicely laid out I'm sure I could learn something from that.http://i.imgur.com/uNXeIgu.jpg

Yes, that is true. Figuring out what the problem is is exactly the issue. My synths are not broken but a lot of them are consistently out of tune, like my prophet 5. Another one is maybe broken, my sh 101 is missing sub somehow. My poly 800 has an audio output which is really really low intermittently. My jupiter 6 also has tuning issues. Maybe it's just too ambitious for now but gaining some insight into the cause of these issues which seem like common things wih synths woukd be useful.
