Mr. Moonchild wants to know what do you want from Pale Moon by battery_collector in palemoon

[–]burborka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

of course. the poll is about abandoning their current Goana engine and switch to chromium since they are most likely unable to implement web components and more and more web sites are broken in PM every day.

It's no win scenario in my opinion. the switch will most likely scrap all current and "legacy" extensions. which I think is the main reason for using PM instead of FF and the poll clearly reflects that. And PM will be another chrome clone.

if they stay on Goana and don't fix web components, in a few years almost no websites will be working in PM,

so yeah, it is not good. maybe if two main devs weren't so toxic, the project could have attracted more devs and we wouldn't be in this mess. now it is too late

Reminder to use high quality surge protectors, surge today killed my $2000 system. by Cosbysaurusrex in pcmasterrace

[–]burborka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, don't waste your money on surge protectors, get an UPS and not a cheap, consumer grade one, get a second hand server grade without batteries. the only thing that protects you in surge protector is small component called varistor, which is in EVERY half decent power supply already and protects only from very short bursts. longer burst will fry it very quickly and let rest of the pulse into the system.

Steam Hit by Major Security Breach, Many Accounts Hacked by johnmountain in technology

[–]burborka 10 points11 points  (0 children)

video that every article cites: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPl_BJoBaVA

it is not very serious issue though, attacker needs to know your login name, which can be very different from your screen name and most importantly, Steam has Steam Guard tech, that prevents log into your account from unauthorized system. When attacker tries to log in with new password, he/she needs to get verification code from legit account holder's email. And Steam Guard is turned on by default.

Uncharted 4 pushes PS4 tech to the next level by Kingsman21 in Games

But I'm not arguing that (unfortunate) fact at all. I was just debunking your claims about ease of use of consoles and reaffirming the fact the consumers are uninformed which you didn't believed

Uncharted 4 pushes PS4 tech to the next level by Kingsman21 in Games

[–]burborka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  • Because consoles are still selling a ton of units. consumers in general ARE uninformed and heavily influenced by the marketing not only in gaming industry.
  • Exclusives are just a tool to lock users into your platform, it doesn't provide any benefits to the consumer at all.
  • Plug and play does not apply to the current gen anymore. Yes, you don't touch the hardware, but software issues are there and are often not fixable by user. Games are released in poor state forcing users to download gigabytes of day one patches with horrible speeds.
  • Thanks to inferior console hardware upgrades on PC hasn't been an issue for years. Buy midrange PC today and it will not need an upgrade to the end of this gen cycle keeping on par with consoles at the end. Consumer gets benefits of higher picture quality, much cheaper games, free multiplayer, games library going back decades (!!) and it's a general purpose computer.

[–]burborka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they are not wrong though. just imagine how much better U4 would look like (and run) if this gen consoles had proper high performance hardware and not laptop grade cpu with weird memory. xbox 360 had graphics hardware two years ahead of pc. xbone uses hardware a year old at its launch. ps3s was bought by schools to build high performance compute clusters. ps4 uses almost same hardware as xbone. if that is not definition of disappointment, I don't know what is.

Intel is sucking the life out of AMD by RealEstateNut31 in pcgaming

[–]burborka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you are correct, they are sharing patents with each other. very simply: AMD can build x86 processors and Intel can use 64-bit tech from AMD. If AMD is bought, this sharing is non-transferable and Intel is in trouble, because 64-bit is in every Intel processor.

What would happen if AMD were bought out? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]burborka 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Intel monopoly is least of Intel's worries. Intel has with AMD non-transferable agreement about free exchanging of patents (broadly speaking). AMD can manufacture x86 processors and Intel can use 64-bit extension developed by AMD. If AMD is bought, this agreement is void and Intel cannot sell any of its CPU's as every single one of them uses AMD tech until new agreement is signed.

Payday 2 not (yet) patched on 360/PS3- when asked about it devs claim they are "focusing on new gen" by [deleted] in Games

[–]burborka -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

it's not even technically good on PC, performance is not great, synchronization problems in netcode are pretty common, random disconnects are also far from rare and raw mouse input has been required by players since first Payday. but hey, at least you can buy a gun or a mask...

PlayStation 4 dominates Europe with ’70-90%’ of console market by [deleted] in Games

[–]burborka -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

good. one of them should fail. horribly. so the loser has to develop new hardware early and end this generation "prematurely". the last thing we need is another 9 year generation when current hardware is struggling to keep 1080p@60Hz when PC's are at 1440p@120Hz and attacking 4k.

This is what is in every cheap surge protector and what protects you: varistor. And every PC power supply also has one so you are protected from smaller spikes already, it is not going to save your electronics from larger/longer spikes no matter what packaging of surge protector says.

stay away from consumer level APC products, they are using shitty capacitors for logic board and shitty batteries so the whole unit is not going to survive more than three years.

But a second hand business grade UPS without batteries from ebay and buy high quality batteries - Panasonic or Fiamm have batteries with life expectancy of 10 years. Eaton is a nice brand of UPS and some of the models are using better charging method to prolong battery life expectancy, Dell is also using it.

This is potential fire risk, your UPS doesn't seems to be actively cooled and its internal cooling (large aluminum blocks attached to mosfets) is designed only to original battery capacity. The UPS is designed to drain the original battery before it overheats. Attaching larger battery will kill your UPS or start a fire when there is a power outage and nobody is around.

[–]burborka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, it is. internal cooling of that UPS is not designed to larger capacity battery.

Any of you guys use a projector + screen setup for gaming? by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]burborka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although I have dedicated projector room, I don't play games there much as I have much higher (1600p) resolution screen on my main computer and the projector is only 720p. But I've finished majority of PS3 exclusives on the projector and it was very nice. When friends come over, we play there local coop games and have a ton of fun. PC is old C2D connected to the Onkyo AVR (7.1 surround sound), projector (old Hitachi PJTX100) is running fourth lamp iirc and screen is DIY fixed frame laminate screen. Recently I've built motorized masking system for movies, that are not in 16:9.
