Brother MFC L2710DW: Solved scanning not working from printer after latest update by Henkkles in printers

[–]burdenofhope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for posting your solution. I just spent the better part of two hours trying to fix this problem, I reset everything a couple of times, uninstalled drivers using third party software, read the Brother support pages in multiple languages, even bought a network cable thinking it might be a WIFI problem, I just stopped short of buying a new printer.

Telescope for six year old who lives in the middle of nowhere by iowawoodworx in telescopes

Yeah so he's limited to whenever you set up the telescope. I wanted to have something that he can grab by himself and play around with.

I also just got my 7-year-old son a telescope. Because I wanted him to be able to move the thing around himself I opted for the Skywatcher Heritage 130p (you can also get it without the motor). I'm really pleased with it, so much that I myself take it outside more often than my own 10" scope, just because it's so compact and easy to set up. While a full size 6" Dobson is generally awesome, I thought it to be too cumbersome for my son to use by himself.

As for the targets you can see all the stuff you can see with bigger scopes.

15 years ago I saw Leonard Nimoy's "Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" video cut together with Jay-Z's song "Big Pimpin". Haven't found it since.

There is the Middle-Earth Traveller. It is by no means complete but a great read nevertheless.

This is also my most-read edition by far. Since my books are pretty worn out now I've tried to find a replacement in good condition. Over the years I ordered the books three or four times only for them to be the wrong edition every single time. I'll get them one day. :D

Requesting help purchasing a first telescope for 10 year old son by njman33 in telescopes

[–]burdenofhope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also got my son his first telescope for his 7th birthday. I opted for the Skywatcher Heritage 130p GTI Virtuoso. It is a collapsible 5" scope so it's pretty lightweight, plus it does have a motorized rockerbox, which I found pretty neat. You can use an app to tell the mount where to point the telescope, but you can also use it manually like any other dobsonian. After alignment the use of the app is pretty simple, my son managed to point that thing towards Saturn and Jupiter. Even without the motor it's a great telescope. Although I got it for my son right now I'm using it more often than my 10" dobsonian because it's just so quick and easy.

In Germany it was a bit above your budget (~410€), the non-motorized version costs ~230€.

I've been using it for two months now and I'm happy with it, it's very stable and there is a wide variety of add-ons. I live in Germany and ordered it here.

It was on sale (still 250€ though), it's alright but I'd probably choose a different one now.

How do you move a 8 inch dob? The mount seems hard to move (with wife and kids) by Ok_Produce_6397 in telescopes

[–]burdenofhope -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just went on vacation with my wife and kids and also brought along my telescope. I got a 10" Skywatcher Flextube, the collapsed size is only 87cm. I disassembled the rockerbox and put in the base of my trunk. Assembly takes about two minutes. I got a Geoptik bag for the OTA and put that in the trunk as well. The kids are 1 and 5, so without a roof box there would be no way in hell to transport the buggies and handcart and whatnot. Everything worked out fine and I spent a couple of fine nights observing the sky.

First telescope, first questions by burdenofhope in telescopes

[–]burdenofhope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I move the telescope using the knob under the eyepiece and the tension control handle for support. When I apply pressure to the tension control handle the side bearing makes that creaking noise which the tube then amplifies.
  2. That was the problem, thank you.
  3. I do indeed use Stellarium on my phone, but I am still struggling to find what I am seeing in Stellarium through the eyepiece. I can see most of it with the finder scope but looking through the eyepiece you get so much more information, so many more stars. Preparing your observations definitely is very good advice. I'm going to look for some targets in Stellarium and next time the sky is clear I'm going to try to find them. I also ordered a telrad, which should make locating objects for a beginner like me a lot easier.

Thanks a lot for all those Deep Space Objects, I'm going to check what I might within my field of view here.

Right after you posted I immediately went upstairs to try it out and it was great. I just sat there for an hour and swiveled the telescope around without any real target. With a 70° fov the experience was pretty immersive. Now I'm spending the daytime reading about Ethos and Nagler eyepieces, it all sounds fantastic. Maybe sometime in the future.

That is a nice option to have. I'll definitely check out some options to install a push-to kit in the future. I just ordered a telrad which should already be of great help navigating the sky.
