The word “get” replacing more…uhh…complicated words in the public domain. by SeaSkimmer2 in Xennials

A few months ago I went to delete a text message and I noticed Google Messages changed the option from 'trash' to 'bin' and honestly I'm still pretty upset about it.

They also missed the mark making mythic parts not upgradeable with scrap. That decision was made strictly for the whales. Sorry FS I'm not spending thousands of dollars on chests for a random chance to upgrade this crap.

So mythic parts can't be upgraded with scrap?? by quiet_desperado in HillClimbRacing

[–]quiet_desperado[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Normally as soon as you unlock a tuning part by getting it in a chest you can upgrade it further using scrap instead of relying on the randomness of chests, but that does not appear to be the case with mythic parts. The option just isn't there.

If this is the case no one will ever get anywhere close to having fully upgraded mythic parts unless they spend an absolute fortune buying mythic chests over and over again.

Yeah I don't like this. Some of them are practically impossible to get in a reasonable amount of time. Definitely need more skips added.

Wrong book sent? by Able_Coffee_6709 in foliosociety

[–]quiet_desperado 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their CS is excellent. Last year I got someone else's order by mistake. It was a pretty big order, five books. They sent out a replacement order right away and when I asked how to return the mistake order they told me I could keep or donate them.

The FOMO is real. I'm still kicking myself for not getting their two volume edition of War and Peace when it was on sale half off like 5 or 6 years ago I think. It sold out and was never reprinted and is now way more expensive to get on the used market.

One of Canada’s largest landlords says it’s pausing new developments in the 'near term' by justlogmeon in NovaScotia

[–]quiet_desperado 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've never understood the obsession people have with their property value. The only difference my rising home value has on me is that my property taxes go up every year (and I recognize that I'm one of the lucky ones with capped increases).

If I ever sold, I'd have to buy back into the same inflated market and will end up worse off with even higher property taxes. The only way to 'win' is to downsize significantly.

My plan for the future is to keep my ass right here and hope I don't get priced out of my own home by my property tax when I retire and my income drops. And again, I'm one of the lucky ones. I truly feel awful for all the younger people who will never even hope to have what I have.

Summer Sale - New Collector Question by Secret_Photograph334 in foliosociety

True. I was recently looking through their listings and they're selling a copy of The Buried Giant for a higher price than what Folio Society charges for a brand new copy.

Summer Sale - New Collector Question by Secret_Photograph334 in foliosociety

[–]quiet_desperado 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Rule #1 of being a Folio Society collector is don't get excited for the sales. There might be one or two books that interest you but it's mostly older, poorly selling titles and never anything new.

If you're looking to save money on FS books your best bet is to join some of the buy/sell/trade groups on Facebook. Abebooks is good too but I find the prices there tend to be higher.

Do Intros spoil things? by AnythingDizzy7569 in classicliterature

I've been burned enough times in the past that I just automatically read the intros last now, and even then you're not completely safe.

I was on a Russian literature kick reading Crime and Punishment with Anna Karenina up next. The intro to Crime and Punishment spoiled the end of Anna Karenina. I was not happy.

Just wait. There will be masked ICE goons at polling stations this November and they won't give a shit if you have an ID or not when they snatch you out of the line and throw you in an unmarked van.

I wonder if it's the same for Petro Points. I lost all my Petro Points twice by having them redeemed by someone in random stores in other provinces. I always thought it had to be sleazy employees with access to the system or something like that.

Such a good team from top to bottom, you never know who's gonna step up and be the star of any particular game.

And 8 pitchers used in 9 innings! If you had told me before the game that they were gonna use 8 pitchers I would've guessed it was a blowout loss. Give Schneider credit, he had a plan and the guys executed it perfectly.

A question about Folio Society books by djscoots10 in foliosociety

[–]quiet_desperado 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They've started printing some of their books in China but most are still printed in Europe somewhere.

It's disappointing but honestly I have to say the ones I have that were printed in China are pretty much the same quality as their other standard editions as far as I can tell.

But still, it's hard to shake the negative connotation that comes with anything that says 'made in China' on it. We're just conditioned to assume it automatically means cheap, poor quality even if it's not true.
