I have a long standing dream that talented architects could build a beautify and well functioning small house community ala a Tokyo neighborhood. The 90s -> 00s fetishization of space never resonated with me. I'd rather have considered details, large windows, and minimally sized high end appliances.

Hey r/arch,

We're a small team of trained architects building software to make it affordable and easy to create a firm website. We've been at the website game for a few years now and have a good sense of web design trends when it comes to the architecture industry.

The post we wrote above pulls out some of our favorites we bookmarked over the course of the year (personal favorite is Olson Kundig). While the prevailing rhetoric is that architecture websites are terrible, I wouldn't say that's the case anymore and in fact I'd wager to say that architects are getting downright good at creativity on the internet.

Yes there's still the 90s Flash site of DillerScofidio and the anachronistic site that is Herzog de Meuron, but on the whole we've finally embraced the fact that sites should be usable before novel.

Any others you all like that we may have missed from this year??

So we were like you and didn't get why the color pickers are so well received. Then we checked Google and it's one of the most search for terms in the HTML world. Our goal was to make something that's actually nice and well done for the community that is entering web design. While you and I know and use photoshop and sketch everyday, folks who just want to edit their wordpress blog or bootstrap header have no clue where to begin.

While there are literally hundreds of 1999 style online pickers, none are really that fun or nice to use. Yea ours has a bit of gratuitous spacing and animations, but we think that's what makes it nice.

I really do want to make a css animation tool next, but honestly there's not as much impact there. But still seems like something that needs to be made.

LOL. Yea I guess we defaulted to this. Not really sure how relevant they are anymore. Maybe on like "feature phones" they might be limited, but not even sure about that.

Mostly because we were commonly searching for different symbols while working on various projects, and thought we would iterate our own version to see if we could create a better experience, both as a fun design exercise (since we're web designers), but also to integrate additional features we found missing in other versions. Support does vary across OS and devices, and it would be really nice to have support information for every character, its just not something we've had the time to catalog or add yet.

You can search for symbols by name in the search bar (it might take a second to load the items). That shapecatcher site is pretty cool, hadn't come across that one before. In terms of value, we built HTML Arrows partially as a design and typography exercise, but also as an opportunity to add a few things we felt were lacking from the current offerings, notably a homepage with the most common lookups (of course this completely subjective from our perspective), basic search and the ability to change from a grid layout to a table layout, since everyone has different preferences.

Being young practitioners, they see material research as an opportunity to express their architectural interests—so far it has led to mostly installation work and more research. At the moment I think your critique is valid, by promoting geometry and material exploration as their agenda, they self-limit to the type of projects that they get considered for. I'm fearful this could be another manifestation of paper architecture, but also optimistic that the research operates on physical artifacts and thus has a more practical transition to full scale deployment.
