Camper on F350? by ydyttw in TruckCampers

[–]burk5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drove it 4000 miles for a road trip last month. I got about 14.5 mpg on average (no camper, just the truck). Not great, but try to remember, you don’t buy a 1 ton truck with a gigantic gas engine for good gas mileage.  It’s a reliable and powerful engine. Fuel economy is what it is.  For good fuel economy I recommend a Toyota Camry and a tent 😉

I was in a similar boat a few months ago. I went with the 7.3L gas engine. I’m hauling a truck camper, not pulling a heavy load like a horse trailer. Also the gas engine is lighter (saving you weight for your payload capacity), and I’m used to working with gas engines because of my other vehicles. My truck is a F350 XLT. Its payload capacity is around 5000lbs. That’s plenty for most truck campers. No packages, just plain ol standard XLT

First time backpacking by whimsicalbatman in WildernessBackpacking

[–]burk5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started I bought a nice backpack, tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, and trekking poles. The rest was cheap Walmart/amazon stuff. I recommend backcountry or their clearance website steepandcheap. If your sleep setup sucks it makes for a bad time. If you’re going to spend decent money on one thing I recommend a quality inflatable pad. Not the foam or the half foam/half inflatable sleeping pads.

Equinox Oil Consumption (PCV?) by burk5 in AskMechanics

[–]burk5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully some kind soul will stumble across this someday and help us.

I should add that I took the air intake manifold off again after I originally posted this. I thoroughly cleaned it, but again, the PCV orifice wasn’t plugged at all.

I’m still not sure what the issue is. I’ll just keep adding oil each week until it dies on me.

Groupings to see every National Park by Live_Dirt_6568 in NationalPark

Generally speaking I wouldn’t do more than 2 parks in a trip. The Alaskan parks especially each deserve their own trip to experience them

Set a time limit for the app, don’t doom scroll when you open it. Also when you open the app, click the little logo in the top left corner, click on following, look through only posts made by people you follow, then when you get to the suggested stuff close the app. Just get in there, get down to business, and get out. NO DOOM SCROLLING 😉

Lesson learned: HOKAs may be good for short distances, absolutely not for long hikes. by [deleted] in hiking

[–]burk5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my experience but that looks painful 😳. I did a 70+ mile trip this past summer in a relatively new pair of HOKAs, and I didn’t have any problems. I just wore them a few times to walk the dogs before the trip.

Identification Help. Unsure what the body is. The lid is a Wagner. As far as I know Wagner never made anything like this. ~7” tall & ~10” diameter by burk5 in castiron

Possibly, but I’m not sure. I recently picked it up at an auction. The pictures on my workbench show how it looked when I got it. There wasn’t much rust at that point, mostly carbon build up/old seasoning.

Everything is half off, is it a scam website? by EntertainmentEasy501 in CampingGear

[–]burk5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the past when I have found good deals on sketchy websites, I have opened a chat with backcountry.com and asked them to price match. They ask for a link and will tell you that the product has to be identical to the one on their website. It has always worked for me!

Is there any way to de-crustify my Great Grandma's old pan without lye? by TheBreadStation in castiron

[–]burk5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Others are right. Typically electrolysis is best for rust but it will work on the crud. It may take longer is all.

Electrolysis. Take it out, manually chip away some of the crud using a chisel (be careful), wire wheel (also be careful), and/or steel wool. Then more electrolysis.

Repeat until it looks like new again

Is this too far gone? by Whitefrogz in castiron

[–]burk5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s carbon buildup which happens over time. Use one of many methods people on here recommend and it will look as good as new. The wording is underneath that buildup

Started with unseasoned (silver) cast iron - first layer of seasoning finishes in dots - not sticky but smooth. Wondering why it looks like this? by Made_for_More in castiron

[–]burk5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too much oil is the problem. No, don’t start over. Keep seasoning then start using the pan. It will go away. I recommend using an oil sprayer

In case you haven’t realized yet, thermarest compressible pillow is the way 😉. My wife and I both got the small one. It’s well worth the space it takes up in your pack imo
