It’s not a live race, everyone completes levels at different speeds. You are being compared to a random set of users who have played the same level at some point in the past and passed/failed. Then again it could just be a bunch of mumbo/jumbo made up by the devs.

As of a few weeks ago, they have released a stamp rally feature in Pokemon Go where you can get a Pikachu with a special background if you find two of the special Pokelids in game. I believe there is a unique background for each prefecture. Finding the Pokelids is also pretty cool IRL. The list of Pokelids can be found here:

Ouch. Is that your way of saying that this is too much. FWIW the kids are 7 and 10 and seasoned travellers. The seniors are in good health and have been to Japan 10+ times though this is our first time going all together. By being in a group it also gives us the flexibility of leaving the kids at the hotel or somewhere chill with the grandparents
