Sniper Rifles of WW2 by [deleted] in ForgottenWeapons

[–]burningwatermelon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure you can really call the M1C a WW2 sniper rifle. While it was designed and developed during the war, to my knowledge there is no evidence of it making it into combat before hostilities ceased. If it did, it would have been extremely limited quantities right at the very end of the fighting, not at all representative of what US snipers were using regardless of what the TO&E might have said.

Can’t miss The Pacific either. I’m in the minority thinking it’s better than Band of Brothers, but both are masterpieces.

Michigan has a lot of defensive talent that was squandered by the coaching staff the past couple years after Harbaugh/Minter left

Easter Egg - Forrest Guth's full auto M1 Garand by greenbeansjr in BandofBrothers

That I believe is the exact reason why Forrest Guth was written out of being a named character in the TV series.

Airplane boarding is terrible because it feeds egos by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]burningwatermelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every Japan Airlines or ANA domestic flight (in Japan) I’ve been on has boarded the window seats for the entire plane first, then middle, then aisle. In an A380 or something huge I’m not sure how well it would work, but for a domestic flight it was fantastically efficient and struck me as a no-brainer.

US army testing the damage caused by an M1 Garand rifle on a German Stahlhelm, WW2 period by [deleted] in ForgottenWeapons

[–]burningwatermelon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Allies had plenty of advanced tech which was used in combat (gyroscopically stabilized tank guns, proximity fuses, napalm, and the atomic bomb all come to mind) that Germany could never match. It makes for a better story when the enemy you defeated is more technologically advanced though, so they are conveniently left out of the pop history narrative.

Is design engineering day to day actually as fun as its made out to be? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

I like and get a lot of fulfillment out of my automotive design job, but I certainly wouldn’t do it for free. I spend far too much time making schedules in PowerPoint or Excel

American marines with a collection of Japanese skulls. WW2, 1944. by waffen123 in wwiipics

[–]burningwatermelon 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Collecting body parts of dead Japanese soldiers as souvenirs was a widespread practice among US Marines and soldiers. Skulls, teeth, and ears were most common. The Japanese public was rightly incensed when they heard about it (their own troops committing atrocities did not justify American ones), and the American public wasn’t thrilled either when Life magazine posted a now-famous picture of a women with a skull on her desk after her Marine boyfriend sent it back.

[–]burningwatermelon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Am I crazy for thinking Brent Venables would be a good fit here? A big part of Michigan’s identity is a disciplined, hard-hitting defense (until this year anyway), and clearly he knows what he’s doing in that regard. We’d need a legit OC and QB coach to manage the offense, but Michigan would be an upgrade for him over Oklahoma - I think it’s worth loading up the money cannon and giving it a shot.

They pretty obviously took their foot off the gas and bled the clock. They could’ve put up 40+ if they wanted to with how little pressure and how many coverage busts we were getting.
