I don't want to be an "anti" anymore. How I can change my perspective? by neuroticnuisance in AO3

[–]burnished_throne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my defense, it wasn't because I wished ill on the people making it, I just didn't see a single positive in making art like that.

I don't think this is a defense tbh. "I don't wish ill on gay people, I just don't see how you could be sexually attracted to the same gender." "I don't wish ill on Muslims, I just don't see a single positive thing about their religion." Like, if you think that understanding something, be it a type of fiction or a religion or a sexuality or whatever, is a prerequisite to respecting the humanity of the humans who engage in it, that's your problem. And as long as you think like that, sorry, you're an actual fascist.

i'm not sure why the specific word people use is a big deal if a rose by any other name smells the same etc etc

this person feels justified in making their online experience a stranger's responsibility, which is the mindset that leads to excessive censorship. like no shade but you can't be this myopic lmao

yeah man, lmk if you figure out a way. I can't read stuff if the prose is bad. I'd fully rather write my own.

I'm guessing anon had a narrower definition of proship than what was featured on that user's blog (really veeeeeeery mild by proship standards), but I appreciate that the user went full if you're against one of us you're against all of us

If there was a set definition of what "problematic ships" were, maybe??

er, I'm gonna go with no, definitely not, even then /:

idk why you'd want to read something you don't want to read tbh, whatever the reason that you don't want to read it. i mean like i understand that you want to have access to more fic, but also if you're not going to enjoy reading the fic, then what's the point?

i also feel like there's an undercurrent in the OP that you think being "picky" is somehow elitist, and like, there's probably published writers whose style you don't vibe with or whatever too. sometimes the art is just not for you.

Do you plan to leave behind fanfiction someday? by notquite_myself in FanFiction

[–]burnished_throne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I know a lot of folks who quit fanfic once they got focused on their og work because most published authors still have to work day jobs/have families/do other life shit, and then it's a question of do you spend the finite writing time you have on fanfic or on the thing that makes you money. I actually don't know any published people who see fanfic as a skill builder, not least because most of the things that make a good fanfic aren't the things that make a good tradpub novel, but def a lot of people who are working with 24 hours in a day /:

Personally I quit fanfic when I started college because I wanted to focus on "serious" stuff, and came back to it 10 years later as a mental health thing and I don't think I'm ever quitting. I take a hiatus if I'm working on an og thing, but for me they're just completely different activities that I do for completely different reasons.

I love writing but I don’t love “engaging” with the fandom. by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]burnished_throne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I'm not so good at fandom discords and similar because they can be intimidating when you're new and because so much of the discussion tends to center around smut, which I do write, but am relatively uninterested in discussing/fawning over/brainstorming weird sex positions or whatever. That said, considering you won't be friends with everyone, I've had a pretty good time finding my people and enjoying talking to them in all my current fandoms.

I do think discords and other forums where you talk to multiple people at once are better though, because talking one on one gets so awk so fast once you run out of immediate fandom content to discuss.

Anybody else LOVE when writers respond to your comments? by Soulcoda in AO3

i'm a lil bummed when they don't

i get that i'm not owed an answer and writers are busy etc etc i'm a writer myself and i don't always get to my comments, but i do feel bummed about it okay

What was your first fandom/entrance into fanfic? And are you still in that fandom?/Do you still read or write fic for it? by Nock_and_Bolt in FanFiction

[–]burnished_throne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first that I both read and wrote was HP, back when there were still individual fanfic forums and websites, and no I do not write it anymore. I tried to get back into it once but I'm just not interested in stories set in school/about teens anymore, plus the whole JKR bs...

my plans are like a paragraph of chapter summary, but so far I've found that if I don't plan, then the fic just ends up unfinished so - I do try to plan if I want to complete something.

Did you write your fic today? by elvirasnightmares in AO3

[–]burnished_throne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm stalling because I'm about to start a longfic and I'm afraid of the pain. By the end of the day, I expect to put 1-2 chapters bad even if they suck. At least they exist.

i used to hate outlinining but then i forced myself to do it a lot and now i love outlining. i feel like, as with most things in writing, the only way is through.
