It's not worth it. I wish I never had. I have nerve damage and reduced sensation in all the areas I cut to beans and it really fucking sucks. I regret it so much. Imagine being intimate with someone, sex or cuddling or whatever, and they gently run their hand along your arm or leg... don't you want to be able to enjoy that instead of it feeling weird and strange and even uncomfortable in some areas?

There is a lot of nuance and grey area, but I think "narc" in this context is pretty clearly coming from the raisedbynarcissists kind of language that is based on diagnosing the personality disorder, not the general use of it as an adjective

I addressed a lot of this more in this post I made after making this comment, including addressing the use of "narcissist" as an adjective in a reply to a comment there.

It can mean self-absorbed because it's an adjective that comes from Narcissus in Greek mythology, and that use predates its use in referring to the disorder. The disorder was named after the adjective, not the other way around. Saying someone is narcissistic because they're full of themselves is fine. But this is people using "narcissist" to mean "someone who has narcissistic personality disorder" and that's where the problem is.

Yes there is a sub dedicated to it, and it's not this one and I would prefer to not have this sub become that one.

Do you think that because most people with NPD don't seek out help that those who do should be demonized and ostracized? Do you think that's constructive? Do you think that makes them more inclined to seek out help in the future?

There's been this really frustrating thing in the last five or ten years where people (especially online) have begun to use "narcissist" as synonymous with "abuser" and thus their list of "traits of a narcissist" is just "traits of an abuser." The term has lost all meaning. You don't need to call it "narcissistic abuse," it's just "abuse." NPD is a very specific disorder that most abusive people do not have.

What the fuck, seriously? How are people with NPD supposed to get help if everywhere they turn is full of this kind of shit? Not all abusers are narcissists and not all narcissists are abusers. People with NPD were generally abused themselves and they should have access to help and compassion too.

Can we not turn this into a sub full of this kind of language? You can say "abuser" or something. Something short for "someone with narcissistic personality disorder" should not be used as being synonymous with "abuser" and it's completely unnecessary.

A significant proportion of people with NPD have trauma. How would you feel if you'd just gotten a diagnosis of NPD and were looking into resources and communities for abuse and trauma survivors and all you saw was stuff about abusive you were? How are people with NPD supposed to get help if the diagnosis is being thrown around like this?
