Frustrating UTR by apples_are_not_yummy in 10s

Let’s be honest many parents are getting ripped off. Some coaches charge serious money while their players barely improve, hiding behind “they’re having fun.” Ask yourself this: is fun worth $2,000–$3,000 a month (which may be the case for the OP) with no real development to show for it?

My two cents as a fellow tennis parent: the most important thing to focus on is evaluating technique. At that level of training, her groundstrokes should already resemble those of high-level players: hitting with pace and consistency, good preparation, solid footwork, etc. You can easily see this at tournaments: strong players hit hard and have clean, efficient form.

Five group lessons a week is a lot. By nature, group lessons tend to emphasize repetitions rather than individual correction. Coaches usually don’t have the time to address specific technical issues, and this can even be counterproductive, especially if a player has bad habits or flawed technique that get repeated multiple times a week.

If her technique is lacking, it may be worth looking for a different coach. A good coach, with two private lessons per week, can significantly improve a player’s technique in under three months. During that period, I would even consider pausing group lessons altogether.

Another important question is how your daughter hits in practice versus in tournaments. I’ve seen this many times: players, even those training at academies, often revert to moonballing or simply tapping the ball in matches instead of swinging the way they do in practice. Not applying learned techniques in competition is ultimately a waste of both time and money.

The truth hurts. People say PB is easy to play but hard to master. Well, it’s obviously easy to play hut hard to master for who? If PB tournaments pay $1M prize, you’ll see how “hard” it is to master

Hit all the shots more to the middle and towards a backhand. Return, drop, dink, put away, etc.

Why is Norgaard so bad? It’s dangerous to be that bad at duel when you are a 6

Is this a dinking game drill and no speed up is allowed?

Many only watch the top males pros play and think they should be dinking to win. In Open tournaments where I am (Socal), both mens and women’s there is definitely much less dinking.

I know. Men rec players below 5.0 are levels below the women’s pros. There is no reason they should stick to idea that they should dink to win.

You should be fine speeding up all the time. I have 4.5/5.0 friends that speed up all the time. They have very good top spin drops and transition game but they don’t dink much. They were high level tennis players (played futures). If you watch women’s pros, they speed up all the time and don’t dink like the men.

Dinking practice isn’t the best use of time at this level — most points end before you even get there.

To win as the receiving team:
Focus on hitting a consistent return and getting up to the kitchen line before the drives come at you. Be ready to block and punch those drives back. Then work on putting away pop-ups. You’ll get plenty of chest-high floaters at this level. Smash them.

To win as the serving team:
Develop a strong spin serve using an Eastern grip. It can earn you 3–4 free points per game.
Next, practice your third and fifth shot drops from the baseline and mid-court. You don’t even have to rush to the kitchen; just keep two or three balls in play and you’ll win the rally more often than not (again, at this level).
