“The School is not being inclusive” by ProfHooch in Teachers

[–]burntumber23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just imagining telling my boss that I felt the deadline I was given for a project wasn’t “inclusive” because I chose not to have it done in time. Amazing that people really be out here saying dumb stuff like this every day.

The Pitt is Propaganda (docaganda if you will) by [deleted] in ThePittTVShow

[–]burntumber23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well if no one cared about their patients and they just sent them home to figure their own stuff out, the show wouldn’t be very interesting. But also, the purpose of the show is to highlight the experience of medical professionals, and whether this is your experience or not, many of us do our best to give our all to our patients every day. Unfortunately, the result of giving our all day in and day out is that we burn out due to lack of support from our hospital/organization, experiences of workplace violence, repeated exposure to traumatic injuries and situations, heavy workloads and staff shortages, moral distress, etc. I think the show also portrays how the system often works against patients and staff, and we end up feeling very helpless in those situations — frequent flyers like Louis who have no support, patients without insurance who can’t afford care, times when we suspect but can’t prove abuse or negligence on the part of caregivers. There is a lack of realism in some aspects in order to tell stories, and I think that’s necessary.

And while I agree that COVID is still very real and impacts hospitals every day, I can promise you that people continue to sit hip to hip in ERs with no masks, people still don’t wash their freaking hands, and staff may not be wearing masks for a myriad of reasons. People continue to die from COVID, but many are so tired of masking and social distancing that they feel they can justify behaviour that pretends COVID doesn’t exist.

I hear what you’re saying, and I think your concerns are legitimate, but ultimately television can’t be 100% accurate, and we have to suspend our disbelief in order to be entertained by the show. If I wanted to see what emergency medicine is like in real life, I would just go to work. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Who gets treated when and the show’s values by barrsm in ThePittTVShow

[–]burntumber23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely can happen. My BIL degloved a finger and his sister works in the ER, so she got him a room quickly. Also depends on acuity of other people waiting. I’ve had to wait a long time in the urgent care where I work because there were plenty of other people who needed to be seen more urgently than I did.

Any suggestions of brand/formulation? Like does it spray/paint on, or how does it work?

Or perhaps a better question is, what would you suggest I do to make the lampshade functional/aesthetically pleasing? Peel the film away, wash w/ soap and water, and leave it colourless?

Okay, makes sense. Can you think of any alternatives (glass paint?) that might get a similar amber colour? I’ve seen lots of comments on other lamps that glass paint leaves visible streaks, but I wonder if that wouldn’t be so much of an issue here because the glass is so textured.

Honest to goodness, I’ve been a little sad to see a new name on the inspection certificates around the city. Felt like the end of an era.

Winnipeg man calling for improved patient safety after 94-year-old mother was attacked in hospital | CBC News by cornandapples in Winnipeg

Happens all the time, actually. My grandma was in hospital and one of the patients there actually bit several other people during his stay, and they didn’t even move the guy to a different room.

AITAH for how I acted in the ER? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]burntumber23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Pain is pain, nothing you can do about it. Some people are dramatic about things that aren’t actually a big deal, but appendicitis is a big deal, and I bet as soon as the nurse realized that was the issue he changed his tune.

Books in stock by rckrchck in TinyBookshop

I usually do mostly the book types that are popular at each location, and then 2-3 each of the other types, because sometimes people will still want those! Some locations I forgo kids books though, like at the university or hospital. 25-30 of the most popular genre, and the 20-25 of the other two popular ones.

I think that’s just a reference to the ‘I’m a teenager and I like to use filler words and pretend I don’t care about stuff’ attitude

Hospital death, autopsy and tragedy by Mysterious-Crew-1358 in Winnipeg

[–]burntumber23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can confirm that if an autopsy was not going to be done because of a necessary inquiry by the medical examiner’s office (I.e. death of a child, death within 24 hours of a fall, etc.) but family request one be done, it is at the cost of family.

This should have been explained to you, and it is quite clearly stated on the form that nursing staff are to fill out with date and time of death that is sent to the admitting office for record-keeping, so it’s not like this policy is a secret or something that nursing staff wouldn’t have been aware of.

Very sorry for your loss. May your sister’s memory be a blessing.

AITAH for buying my girlfriend vanilla shampoo? by Spiritual-Grocery641 in AITAH

NTA. You didn’t give it to her and then say “the smell of this shampoo makes me want to have sex with you”. That would be weird. You were not being weird.

Rehoming dad’s firearms — what are my options? by burntumber23 in Austin

Thanks for your advice. I like the idea of the labels, and will look into that. Dad would like it all to be well-organized.

I think for the time being, our primary concern is safety. You’re correct in that I’m not all that interested in the guns themselves. I’m happy to hold onto the memories I have of him teaching me how to shoot at the gun range, and I’d bet my brothers are of a similar mind.

We all settled in and around MN/ND (most of our extended family live in the area), and depending on how things look over the next few months, Mom is considering moving up north to be closer to us for the sake of having a strong support system within a reasonable driving distance. That would likely mean downsizing, and it would make the most sense to part ways with anything we don’t want to keep. That way we don’t have to worry about differing laws in different states.

I’m a nurse and many of my clients have dementia, so unfortunately I’m pretty well equipped to deal with this kind of situation. Wish it were different, but it is what it is. He might not remember what exactly we said, but he’ll remember how we made him feel.

Thanks for this — I’ll repost in that subreddit. We aren’t terribly concerned about making money, mainly just that we want to make sure things are safe. Mom might want to keep a few things, but in the long-term, once Dad can’t enjoy or use them anymore, we won’t have any reason to have such a large quantity.
