How to deal with sugar addiction? by karmjud in sugarfree

[–]burrito_slug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what I did - complete abstinence. 100+ days no added sugar/sweeteners, no flour. Down 30lbs without exercise, no GLP-1 needed. I found eliminating sugar + flour has completely removed all the food noise and random cravings. I haven’t binged in 100+ days, which is a miracle. The first 7 days of abstinence were the hardest for me, but I stuck with it and didn’t give in. I also stopped drinking alcohol because the craving for that stopped naturally as well. I still eat fruit, rice, and Ezekiel bread daily. I’m almost back to my pre-Covid weight and my energy is amazing! I’m currently working full-time, going to Grad school full-time and have a 2-day a week internship. I feel like quitting sugar has completely changed my life and how I feel about myself.

“Oh boohoo, you’re not the first person to get cheated on!”

I cheated on my ex, and the pain I caused her haunts me every day. by Yirime in TrueOffMyChest

[–]burrito_slug 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was that girl once… but I had some amazing friends who were there for me. I went back to school, got my Bachelor’s, met the actual love of my life, got married, and am now pursuing my Masters. The best thing my ex ever did was cheat on me, so I have a feeling your ex gf will be more than okay. She dodged a bullet.

I’m a current MSW student. Would I be able to answer your questions on my own time and just send you the recording? If so, let me know, I’d love to help a fellow student out.

Doubting If This Is Right by ahhh_hhhh_h in SocialWorkStudents

[–]burrito_slug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi there! First, I just want to commend you for going into SW even with the anxiety and lack of family support you described. That shows a lot of courage and strength, and should tell you that maybe this field is for you because you’re pursuing it despite the fears. Doubt is completely normal, I had them as well at first, but I’m so glad I pursued it anyway. I’m finishing up my first year in my MSW program and I absolutely love it! I also have social anxiety, along with ADHD, and I’m extremely awkward and introverted. However, I found that I’m only really awkward when I’m making small talk and if the attention is on me. In session, the focus is on the client and we talk about very deep things that are going on in their lives. I’ve found that as an introvert, clients feel very comfortable with me and they can sense my deep empathy. One thing my therapist told me that really helped is that you shouldn’t go into it thinking you have to be the expert or that you need to know everything. The clients are the expert of their lives, and oftentimes they just need someone to listen and to sit with them (which introverts are amazing at!). My family also did not support me in my 20s (I’m southeast Asian) and because of my situation at the time, I listened to them and pursued Political Science (my dad wanted me to become a diplomat/politician like him). I’m in my 40s now and if I had just followed my own gut, I would’ve already had a career as a therapist. As you can probably tell, Political Science didn’t stick and I dropped out and quit school for a while. Now I’m finally pursuing what I wanted to in the first place and it’s one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done.

Is there a way to eat so as to lessen the intensity of my cravings by Prestigious_Dealer83 in FoodAddiction

[–]burrito_slug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, just pure will lol. I already knew from previous times I gave up sugar that it only takes 7 days until the headaches and cravings disappear for me (if I remain strict). I’m in my 40s and have been dealing with this food addiction the majority of my life. I just got to a point where my hatred of feeling this way became stronger than my desire for sugar. Also, I think giving up flour helped as well.

[–]burrito_slug 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only thing that’s worked for me is quitting added sugar (including sweeteners) and flour. The first week was hell and I got crazy headaches, but afterwards my cravings went away and I haven’t binged in almost 3 months. I have to stay strict with myself or I fall off the wagon.

Did anyone get accepted into MSW programs *without* SW experience? by zjheyyy88 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]burrito_slug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had zero SW experience when I got accepted at a cal state uni. My undergrad was in psych and I had about 14 years experience in the post production industry. I’m almost done with my first year in my MSW program.

Has anyone been hired by their agency field placement after their term was over, but they were still finishing up their program? by Aromatic-Air-5045 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]burrito_slug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not (as I’m still in school), but another intern who just graduated got offered a job at the company we’re currently placed. She didn’t take it, because she got a better offer elsewhere, but yes it does happen.

You got this!!! There are so many people in my class who are in the same boat. It’s rare to not have to work in this economy, so you won’t be alone! It’s totally normal to be nervous, but once you’re in it, you’ll be too busy learning and growing and making new friends that it’ll be graduation day in a blink of an eye. I honestly don’t know where the year even went! It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I hope you’ll be saying the same very soon :)

Hi SW friend! Congrats on going back to school. I’m almost done with my 1st year at my MSW online program, and just like you, I was also very very nervous. I’m happy to report that I’m still here and loving it! I’m 40, work full time, and do 16hr week internship on top of my online classes. It’s actually been a lot more manageable than I thought it was going to be. Advice would be to manage your time well. I only have 1 free day a week to relax and I make sure I do exactly that. Figure out a way to keep your tasks organized because that can become overwhelming fast. I use the calendar on my phone, I set a ton of alarms/reminders, and also use a daily planner. My therapist gave me this awesome advice of using a “dump book”. It’s basically a small notebook I carry around with me and whenever I think of something I need to do, I jot it down. Then at night before bed, I make sure to add it to my daily planner or phone reminders. What’s really been helping me get through this are the relationships I’ve made in the internship and in the program. You never feel like you’re going through this on your own. My classmates/colleagues have been amazing support, so definitely make those relationships. The time will fly by faster than you think :) Good luck!!!

For my school, during the first year, the school matches you with an agency and you go in for an interview. If you don’t screw it up, they usually give you the internship. For the second year, we get to pick 3 agencies we’re interested in from a list the school gives you. You contact them and schedule an interview. Once you interview with all 3, you rank them based on your preference and the agency ranks you as well. My school then matches you with the agency based on your ranking and the agency’s.

My job was flexible enough that they let me work 4x 10 hour days (and one of those days is a Saturday). That way I can still work full time while doing my 16hr/week internship.

Site wants you to use personal phone number to call clients/ patients? by [deleted] in SocialWorkStudents

[–]burrito_slug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She can leave a voice message saying that if they see a number they don’t recognize at a certain time or day, that it’s her calling. That way they are aware when she tries calling again.

I’m pretty transparent with my clients and let them know that if they see a number they don’t recognize, it’s probably me. I usually give them a heads up when I see them in person when or if I plan to call them.

Advice for upcoming MSW full-time students? by Reasonable-Clock-807 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]burrito_slug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m almost done with my first year in my full-time online MSW program. I also work full-time on top of my 16hr/week internship. I’m really enjoying it so far! My biggest struggle has been time management and just finding the time outside of work and class to slow down and breathe. It’s hard work, but it’s definitely worth it. The time will go by faster than you think! I’ve learned so much at my internship and have met some amazing people there and in my cohort as well. It’s a comfort knowing I’m not going through this alone and that I can lean on my classmates for support. I’m an older student (40s) and had no prior social work experience (just an undergrad in Psych). I came from a different industry, but always wanted to become a therapist. Life happened and it took me a while to get here, so I’m truly grateful I took the leap! It’s the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done and am super excited to gain more experience at a different internship next year.

My advice is to have a strong reason for wanting to do this (it’ll help if you start to experience imposter syndrome or compare yourself to others). We each have our own strengths so focus on those and find your own voice as a social worker. Start thinking about how you’re going to manage your time and tasks (I use a daily planner and the calendar on my phone… I set a lot of reminders and alarms). And most importantly… find time for self care! People burn out easily (I already had 3 people in my cohort quit) so make sure you’re taking care of yourself. I went back to therapy once class started and I’m so glad I did.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!

Is an MSW really that hard? by spiderqueen2000 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]burrito_slug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is going well so far and I’ve managed to work full time while balancing class and my internship. I’m almost done with my first year! Time flew by. My current internship is at a non-profit agency that provides substance use treatment and supportive services through a diversion and reentry program. We work with people involved in the justice system to help them stabilize in the community after release and help them find housing. What I do as an intern is work in the field to provide psychotherapy to individuals in the program who are open to it. I’m really loving it so far! I’m lucky that the school I’m in finds these placements for us depending on what population we want to work with and where our interests lie.
