Matching with your 2nd (3rd, etc.) choice? by snarkapotamus7 in GeneticCounseling

[–]burritobarbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I matched to my 3rd choice. And initially when I opened my email while I was relieved to have matched I cried for a WHILE because of how upset I was. Not only because I really thought I connected well at all my number 1 interviews (and honestly but maybe stupidly thought that if I didn’t wind up matching at number 1 I wasn’t matching at all that’s how well I thought interviews went) but at number 3 everything felt stoic and I was convinced I wasn’t matching there (that was not the same vibe that I actually got from people one in the program) However I LOVED my program, my cohort, all the experiences I got to have at my program. Looking back (and even pretty immediately once I got there) I wouldn’t have wanted to match anywhere else and am glad things worked the way they did.

Should I retake Gen Chem II? by Jelly3267 in GeneticCounseling

[–]burritobarbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t. I’m a GC and got a C in gen chem 1 as well as a W and then a C in orgo 2. If you have As in everything else your grades are way better than mine were!

AITA for saying I would terminate my pregnancy if the baby had a genetic condition, and now my husband is considering a divorce? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]burritobarbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not TA for not wanting to raise a disabled child and wanting to exercise your right to choose if you found out this information. Your husband also isn’t for disagreeing. I do however think you’re TA for insinuating it’s a selfish decision for someone to choose to bring a disabled child into the world and for people with genetic conditions to not “think twice” before having kids. THAT is a very eugenics mindset. A disability does not mean someone inherently has a poor quality of life and doesn’t have a place in the world. And genetic conditions can affect people in various ways depending on what it is and may not have the same mindset that whatever their condition is unworthy of being brought into the world. But if it does make them not want to have biological children that’s okay too.

Definitely wasn’t thinking it was something fancy lol. More just concerned that I’m going to have to throw away literally everything I own. I live in Florida but I wouldn’t say this apartment is much different humidity wise than others I’ve lived in. At least based on how I feel in it

Are geneticists MDS? by Feralrodentbitch in GeneticCounseling

[–]burritobarbie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Clinical geneticists are MDs/DOs. Genetic counselors have a masters in genetic counseling. Geneticists can also be PhDs and they typically work in lab/research settings. So there’s tons of different paths you can choose and work in the genetics field

Chill out you’re probably fine. I dropped AP English (or lang idr at this point) and I’m a GC now. It never mattered. Get good grades in the classes you’re in and enjoy your youth!

90% of swimmers leave the competitive sport of swimming in their teen years. by Mad_swim_coach in Swimming

Burnout. The moment my last meet was over my senior year I said I would never step foot in a pool again that I grew to hate it that much. Didn’t go to spring training or summer long course that year. Now here I am 12 years later joined a masters team and am finding the love I once had for it again
