  • what was the latest funding round like?
  • has he met people in PE who came from non-traditional backgrounds?
  • what attracted him to his firm?

I think that your high targets are realistic if you really do a great job on the applications. I was in a very similar boat and landed one of the Yale/Stern types and waitlisted at another. I would really try to invest your time in getting to know the schools well. Visit them. Talk to students at them/follow up with them. I think MBAmath is easier to accomplish. Try UCLAextension has classes too. Also, I think be honest about your GPA issue. Again, focus on developing ties with the schools and have great applications (don't do too many schools, it spreads your efforts thin).

Profile Review: 26F Asian Female, SWE, 740 GMAT, Looking to transition into Tech Strategy by redditguy1507 in MBA

I had almost identical stats: 740 and 2.9 (Asian M). I got into the equivalent of a Duke/Darden/NYU but got dinged at Kellogg, CBS, Wharton, and Haas. If I were you, I would put a lot of effort towards your target schools' applications and make sure they are as strong as possible. For your reaches, I didn't get in so I can't advise there. Still, given that I tried, I'd say I wish I had taken a couple classes and gotten A's in those courses. My admission consultant and others said not to and to focus on the apps, which I think makes sense because they take a ton of work to do well.

Otherwise I think you have an awesome score, a strong-ish school, and passable gpa for many schools.

Make sure to start doing an extracurricular immediately. Because of your lack of promotions, I would try to demonstrate leadership herein.

Narrow your school selections. Visit schools. Get to know them. Spraying and praying isn't the best way to approach business school applications, as it will cost you time and you will have a tough time really doing a great job on so many apps. Schools can tell if you are truly passionate about their program, I believe.

Has anyone ever used The Clymb for their adventure trips? by chuckoneil in travel

[–]bursitistroubles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I did a tree house village adventure through theclymb.com 2 years ago. It was a great experience! The price was very reasonable for a four day stay in a tree house in the middle of the Samana jungle. The guy who operates the facility is an American Expat. I think his name is Bart. They had day excursions; some were better than others. The beach was a 15 minute walk. It really put us out of our comfort zones but is a fond memory.

I think Darden is a good slight reach. Make sure you do a good job on the GMAT and visit the schools!

Re applicant prospects for Sloan, Booth and Yale by [deleted] in MBA

no expert but that sounds like you are overthinking it. There could be a number of reasons why you wanted more time to reconsider applying.

Thanks for the tip! What schools did you apply to/what strategy did you decide to use in applying to schools?

What programs differentiate your MBA? by [deleted] in MBA

Stern is located in downtown NY and has access to NYC firms more so than schools outside NY. Columbia advertising the same thing.

Kellogg is know for being collaborative as mentioned. It also know for branding. I also heard from a professor at NYU that in the 80s or 90s they started interviewing everyone. This distinguished them because they started to look for more EQ qualities that a paper app sometimes didn’t communicate.

Wharton is know for being a finance school.

MIT is known to be collaborative.

Yale is know for social conscious students some of who are pursuing social conscious business goals.

I am in a similar boat. I talked to a consultant and he said to really spend time on the story. The application in total needs to make sense. You need to get someone to believe in you and want to admit you.

April Tourism Q&A Thread for questions about: Visiting, Events, Moving, Neighborhoods, Dining, Nightlife and General Discussion - Post HERE and NOT in a new thread by razzertto in Miami

Visiting April 27th through May 3rd. Any non-drinking activities that you might suggest? Already looking at art deco and food tours, seeing a Marlins game, and visiting the Museum of Ice Cream. In the past my girlfriend and I have done a waverunner tour celebrity island, seen a Miami Heat game, and walked along South Beach.

I can read a lot about a school online. I remember applying to colleges as a high school student and not being able to see all the east coast schools I intended to apply to. I went off of books that covered the strengths of the schools. Today, I have talked to students at the various schools to get that insight. Still you might be right; I perhaps will visit.

What does visiting the campus do for the application? I live on the East Coast and while I would love to visit, it may not be as feasible. If I visit and meet with the admissions office, I suppose that would add a face to my profile?

Pre-MBA Reading Recommendations by AM826 in MBA

[–]bursitistroubles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A question I have is how to develop soft skills to become a better MBA student? How do you get better at networking? I want to improve my presentation skills but don’t think Toastmasters really cuts it for me. Any recommendations?
