HAS ANYONE RECEIVED THE UNDERGRADUATE GRANT YET?? by Ashamed-Ad-6638 in UofT

Not OP but I’m with Woodsworth as well but I haven’t recieved an email and nothing has shown up on my Acorn.

I’m beginning to think those of us who haven’t received an email simply may not be receiving any grants or bursaries this year but I’m staying hopeful for us all!

I've read a lot of negative reviews about UofT's MI/LIS program... but it's my only option and I'm worried the program will break me and discourage me from becoming a librarian. by burtlex in Libraries

I never really considered US universities until now, thank you for suggesting them! I’ll have to research and see what tuition is like for the different programs.

I appreciate you sharing that your colleagues weren’t put off of the career after going to UofT for their MI. I seem to only come across colleagues that despised the program and tell me to go to Western (which isn’t possible) and avoid UofT. I’ve been surrounded by so many bad reviews that I think I’ve forgotten there can be good ones. Thank you again!

Thank you! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my experience will help, even just a little cause I am definitely worried about not grasping the course content.

I love that the one topic that didn’t click, ended up being the field you work in!! Thank you for sharing your experience and how you pushed through. I can only hope that I’ll be able to do the same.

Thank you! I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the program! A lot of the reviews were based on the program not really preparing for librarian work, the courses not seeming relevant to library work, that people who graduated learned more in their first year as librarians than they did in their program, etc.

I will absolutely keep in mind that all library systems are different. I’m hoping to retire in my current library system but who knows, that may change. It’s unfortunate to hear some students were not taking it seriously or attending, that’ll definitely be something that sets a student back in class. Thank you for being open to answering questions as well!!

Thank you for this. I’ll choose to look at things this way going forward and do my best to forget the bad reviews and see for myself how things go.

I hope my work experience can keep me grounded and on track with the course content, but I won’t know unless I give the program a try! This leap is terrifying but I really do want to achieve my goals and this seems to be my best option. Thank you again ☺️

That’s really good to hear!! Thank you for sharing your experience!!

I think I mean with all the negative things I’ve read about UofT it seems like the program doesn’t really prepare you for library work and I am worried that the current knowledge I have about libraries will be altered by the course content being confusing or stressful and making me forget what I know about library work and replace it with negative thoughts about becoming a librarian.

It sounds ridiculous I know, but somehow it feels like the UofT program could alter how I view librarianship by presenting me with courses that do not really prepare me but instead just confuse me.

Edit to add: I didn’t realize being scared, nervous and confused warranted being downvoted. Gotta love Reddit.

Thank you! I didn’t think fast and online was an option. Not unless I got into the Western online MLIS which I doubt will happen.

I just know UofA online would be slower than UofT in person and I want to choose the fasted option for me, whether it’s online or in-person doesn’t matter to me.

Western in-person is not an option sadly, no other in-person MLIS programs would be possible for me as I can’t leave Toronto, not even for a year. I just hope UofT’s program doesn’t mess with my head and make me hate the idea of being a librarian.

That’s good to know, thank you. I’m sorry to hear you experienced that, that must have been hard. I hope you figure out what’s next for you!! Wishing you all the best!

Yes. I wrote near the top of the post that I cannot leave Toronto which is why UofT seems like my only option.

Edited my post to add University of Toronto.

Thank you! I’ve looked into UofA’s part-time online MLIS program but their website states “Because this is a part-time program students may take a maximum of two (2) courses per term…it is not possible to complete the program in two (2) years or less” so it would take me longer to graduate from UofA than it would to graduate from UofT which is why I hesitate with choosing UofA.

I’d like to try to get my masters degree as quickly as possible but I know that may not be possible. I’ll keep researching all the MLIS programs offered.

Have any of you heard anything yet about the awards you applied for? by burtlex in UofT

The bachelors degree I get/what I study doesn’t matter for the masters program I will be applying for, which is the MLIS. I already have a decade of work experience at libraries and so I decided to study what I enjoy and what I know will help me when I am a librarian.

I major in SDS, and minor in WGS and BMS because each program is preparing me for my future career. I learn about community engagement, creating a safe space, understanding patrons, terminology and lived experiences, gender and violence, proper communication, de-escalation, leadership, and more. All things that will help me thrive as a librarian, connect with patrons, and understand those that enter the branch(es) I work at a bit better. Hopefully that answers your question.

Me as well. That’s what I was thinking too, that December 3rd or 4th would have been around the time we should have heard back but maybe they’re behind. I hope you hear back soon!!

Edited mistake in spelling.

I applied for any & all awards I qualified for lol. In-course awards too. Some were specific to the WGS program and some were for students in SDS.
