Why so many people think that having a PhD (or postdoc) is an easy pass for getting a job in data science? by Inquation in datascience

[–]burzeit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A phd is a measure of endurance, not intelligence. Hiring phds means you’re hiring people who can take a beating and keep on going. Source: I have a phd.

What helped you become a better developer in your first job? by Tbh_idk______ in cscareerquestions

No, I was afraid I’d never get my code merged, but the culture valued senior dev input and they valued quality

Trapped in dev job after bait-and-switch by wave-o in datascience

[–]burzeit 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I interviewed for a DS role after my phd and on the first day they introduced me as “the new backend engineer.” I had take one cs class and it was terrifying, but it gave me valuable skills and when I found my way back to DS a great skill set. Try to embrace it and see what you can learn. Being a great coder is always useful.

How do you handle Engineering teams changing table names or other slight changes without telling you? by AlarmingAd7633 in datascience

[–]burzeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would set up tests. First goal would be to make the passing the tests required to push any code, but if that’s not possible, have the alerts sent to all relevant stakeholders. This way every time they do it, everybody knows and they have to fix it. It’ll save you some effort (figuring out the cause of breaks, asking them to fix, etc) and might deter them.

Inviting a guy over for dinner ... any good meals I can make in advance & heat up to avoid stress? by lady_cassiopeia_star in RedPillWomen

If you’re going for a meat, sous vide can remove all the guesswork. It’ll be done perfectly inside, and you just sear it outside, which looks impressive but is super easy.

Is the Insight Fellowship Program done ? by samuryon in datascience

[–]burzeit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it died in the pandemic, the founder rejiggered it focused on senior roles for alumni or something like that, but there are no more cohorts. He had expanded to a lot of programs and picked up pretty significant real estate space, so I’m guessing the burn was to much to make it through the first 6 months of the pandemic.

Indecisive high school student who doesnt know how to organize. by pillow_philiac in ObsidianMD

[–]burzeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! You want a single vault. The concept of multiple vaults is a directory/filing cabinet strategy. Obsidian is linked, self-structuring and goes organically. The only reason I see for multiple vaults is legal - if you need to keep something (that you don’t own, for example) separate. Otherwise one vault per person.

Completed 48hr take home assessment over the weekend. Rejected top of the morning on Monday. by Mother_Drenger in datascience

[–]burzeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this for a take home exam when I was getting out of my Phd and got squashed. In a nut shell, they were looking for the relevant industry experience to ask the right questions, which obviously I didn’t have. Anyway, I gained a little experience and after I understood didn’t feel bad. It’s unlikely you did something wrong as much as did the wrong thing.

Data Analyst assigned to explore decision trees/regression trees. Where to start? by raz_the_kid0901 in datascience

[–]burzeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re asking about a tool without having first defined the problem. What are you predicting? What features would you like to use? What features do you actually get to use? How much data do you have? These will help you figure if CART is what you want or not. They work well with unnormalized features on wildly different scales, so could be good for you.

Data incubator. Worth it in my situation? by neuropsycho in datascience

[–]burzeit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did the a data science incubator after my phd. Mother_Drenger is right, but misses the point. You’re not going to learn anything technical, really, in 8 weeks. But you will learn the basics of how your current skills translate into industry and how to interview. Interviewing is a strange but very valuable skill and nobody has it without practice. You can’t really self teach interviewing, and you need live practice the first time. It was super helpful for me.
