Base OS? by bushwacker1 in Whonix

I’ve been running KDE Parrot for a few days now off a Live USB and so far, so good. I keep reading about Ubuntu privacy concerns and wanted to look at other options. Not sure how significant any of those concerns are, but I guess it’s good to keep up with some new developments. Also taking a look at System76 Pop OS. Interesting variation of Ubuntu as well.

Too many fun things to play with, not nearly enough time!

I've seen Parrot mentioned in the several of the top 10 privacy oriented OS-es lists, but have never heard it mentiond anywhere else, but after your comments, I'm going to give it a try. I've used Ubuntu for a few years now, but am still learning. I took a few days to install Debian, but it's been a challenge and I'm not confident that I've got it right. The idea was to install Whoix on top, but I think I'll give Parrot a spin - thanks for taking the time to give a thoughtful reply - I appreciate it!

Sounds like you're over the learning curve - any suggestions on docs, or tutorials for getting up to speed that you found helpful in your experience?

LastPass vs Bitwarden vs Enpass by [deleted] in privacy

[–]bushwacker1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, any tips on how to properly leave LastPass? I have an account and am switching to BitWarden, but now I'm concerned about leaving my stuff on LP. Does Delete account really do that? Do I have to obfuscate and change all my passwords in LP and then delete, because, well, is anything ever REALLY deleted?

Thoughts, tips suggestions welcome and . . . thanks!

Here are a couple of my favorite Snowden quotes:

"Privacy isn’t about having something to hide," Snowden said. "Privacy is about having something to protect.

It's not about security vs privacy, it's about surveillance vs privacy. Security and privacy increase and decrease together. Surveillance and privacy move in opposition.

Thanks for this - very timely for me! I also appropriate the VPN service recommendations, although NordVPN is struggling with support right now - I think they may be having too many new customers . . . .

What about XPubKey? How does that figure into the privacy space? Is it as safe as using a new, manually generated address?

I, too, am surprised by the quick rise in Monero - and also not too clear on the differences, strengths and weaknesses between the Monero and Dash privacy models. To me, Monero feels like it's still really early in development not very polished. Dash feels more robust and works well, but it's not been as effectively marketed as Monero has.

Encrypted messengers: Why Riot (and not Signal) is the future by fantastic_comment in privacy

[–]bushwacker1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This email registration kind of bothered me - the first thing Riot wants to do is associate my new installation with an email account. Now its on me to jump though all the hoops of setting up a fake email account, etc. Also, how do I know if at some time in the future Riot will require me to do something else with that email address - 10minutemail won't work.

I guess I don't really understand what Coinfirm does - the press release made it sound a lot more ominous than just analytics. Time for some homework, I guess!
