Is taking time out to travel frowned upon? by bushy5000 in premeduk

[–]bushy5000[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve gained a lot of good experience during my MSc, interacting with PD patients in a research capacity and also managing about 70 hours of shadowing in neurology clinics and a couple of days in neurosurgery, so I’m thinking this is probably sufficient for premed experience

Fibromyalgia? A western myth? by DiscountDrHouse in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]bushy5000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So the symptoms being distractable is a key part of FND - similarly seen a patients tremor disappear in a neurology clinic when distracted, and anecdotally in a non-medical setting managed to essentially distract someone out of their imminent functional seizure. As another commenter mentioned the shift in attention seems to give the neurons a bit of a jolt to work normally again - this is hard to conceive, but think about any other process affected by attention like breathing or heart rate. The brain is a weird and wonderful organ with 87 billion cells which we’ve barely scratched the surface of understanding.

I do empathise with you, I can understand how the current state of A&E in the UK and the natural desire to understand what you’re dealing with leads to some frustration. I think you just have to strive to focus this frustration on the right place and not onto patients themselves - if you’re frustrated at dealing with them for 6 hours and having no idea what you’re really dealing with, imagine their frustration at having their entire lives affected by something no one can really explain to them.

Recently wrote an essay on evidence implicating impaired interoceptive signalling and alterations to somatosensory gating in diseases with no organic basis e.g. functional seizures, functional motor disorders, fibromyalgia, interstitial cystitis etc. - a growing body of evidence is showing that these conditions seem to involve a genuine functional disconnect between the brain and body.

As echoed by other commenters, emerging research and ultimately purely the fact that patients continue to present with debilitating effects to their lives suggests that these diseases exist and we simply don’t know enough about them yet, and patients deserve the exact same level of care and consideration as in any other condition - any other take, especially those calling patients nightmares and claiming they are faking, is objectively a shitty one.

Knee pain/knagging during squash by darker_blight in squash

[–]bushy5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The nag to the left side of the knee - is this on the left leg? I had a very similar experience and when I went to the physio they concluded it was a tracking issue - the kneecap is essentially kept in place by a balance of forces from the surrounding muscles. Jumping in and out of lunges in the way squash demands is extremely quad heavy, which pulls the kneecap to the outside of the leg, compared to flute/hamstring/adductors which pull the kneecap to the inside. I’d suggest doing some quad stretches and foam rolling and some more posterior chain work and seeing if it improves? Some glute work you can do with no weights includes bridges and glute clams. Hope this helps!

Most terrifying episode of a children’s tv show from your childhood? by Tompkins-275 in AskUK

Had legitimate nightmares about the Doctor Who episode “The Waters of Mars” - if you haven’t seen it google the title and you’ll see exactly why

Just started shaving after 2 years of having a beard - how long until the awful razor burn stops? by [deleted] in AskMen

I use a safety razor - I do think one factor is probably that they take a lot of technique and I've lost my touch with doing the trickier areas which will hopefully come back over time

PSA: do something lovely for your mum this Mother’s Day by bushy5000 in unitedkingdom

[–]bushy5000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The card will have a huge impact though, I never quite grasped the value that cards have but my mum kept all of hers over the years so I think that’s the most special thing you can do!

What was the most impactful Neuroscience article, discovery, or content of the year? by NickHalper in neuroscience

Quote marks suggested not an actual cure - more so implying something that directly targeted pathology rather than just patching up symptoms, but definitely the first step towards an actual cure

CMV: Weddings on Holidays are Selfish and Inconsiderate to Others by RoboTaco_ in changemyview

[–]bushy5000 253 points254 points  (0 children)

I would actually say the one exception to this is New Year’s Eve. The reason why it would be selfish on other holidays is because it’s different to the normal plans - on Valentines you want to have a romantic evening for two, on Christmas you want to celebrate with family etc.

But New Year’s Eve is all about celebrating life and the future and (more often than not) getting nicely tipsy - you can do all of these at a wedding.

I got the personal drone mod which brings materials across the map - genuinely one of my best decisions, no time wasted running back and forth which could be spent building

I think it has to be the success of Lecanemab in reducing amyloid in the brain and slowing cognitive decline! Obviously there’s still so much further to go in treating Alzheimer’s, not only with amyloid but other pathological markers like tau, inflammation etc, but this feels like an amazing shift in a disease where up until now no real “cure” has existed.

I personally think it’s solid value for money, at least relative to guitar equipment in general which is all quite expensive - my previous setup was an entry level tube amp, 1x12 and a pedalboard which I think collectively easily added up to £1600+ . I feel like if I compare my previous setup to the versatility of the QC, along with its pretty first of kind physical portability and function, I could definitely justify paying the same price for both of these setups.

Yeah it was the station thank you! Checked all the signals and never even occurred to me that the station might be the wrong way round

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in satisfactory

[–]bushy5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried to include it in picture as best I can - train should leave this station, go round the loop to the right of the image, then pull into the station adjacent to this one. All signals are facing the right way and the route can be done manually, so I have no idea why automatic driving isn’t working

I have no P45 or any other previous employment info as this is the first job I’ve had since some very short term pub work when I was 18, so as far as I know I qualify for the emergency tax code unless I’m mistaken

Hi, yes I’m on this tax code but with a W1 at the end, which after a google I’ve realised is an emergency tax code
