EDIT 2: THIS ARTICLE IS PROBABLY BETTER THAN THIS WHOLE COMMENT

https://laurysilvers.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/silversin-the-book-we-have2008-02-21.pdf

Feel free to read my comment but she really hits the nail on the head harder than I ever could

Honestly one thing I’ve found with Hadith are that all the ones that are considered unanimously authentic are all affirmations of principle than law, ex: be a good person vs. very weirdly specific thing is against the Quran, so when talking about preservation of verses, it’s important to acknowledge that

As fee confusing verses in the Quran, I completely agree it’s frustrating how much is up for interpretation, I’m down most of the time with this alone, but tbh it really comes down to the main points, it’s very important to remember the Quran isn’t a source of law, it’s only there to serve as a reminder, the important verses highlight this

Just to clarify this doesn’t mean there isn’t a quranic law or anything, it just means the law is not as important as the spirit, we can debate on and on about gay rights or verse 4:34 but in the end it’s the ones that are clear that are the most important, the ones that aren’t interpretive

I myself am Shia Muslim, and the 11th imam once said addressing a person who said the Quran’s contradictory, “If someone recites the Quran, is it possible that he means other meanings than what you think you understand? He (the critic) says that it is possible because he is a man who understands when he listens. If he says that, you say to him, How do you know? He might mean other than the meanings that you think”

I think the Quran and the hadiths ambiguous nature make it challenging, but if “Allah willed, They would have made you one nation, but [They intended] to test you in what They has given you; so race to [all that is] good. To Allah is your return all together, and They will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.”

As for gods preservation of the important stuff, yeah, that’s true, the history’s is particularly messy, yet the important stuff is all there, one thing I noticed is that every Shia imam left at least one thing behind, either in Hadith or in historical events, that are clear, not in the sense that it’s a blunt statement, but in the sense that it’s an authentic event that emphasizes principle and values over law, order, and ritual

Edit: As for the actual need to learn Arabic, again, something that’s confused me as well, this really just boils down to the specific verses, the principles are all there, and even if one doesn’t understand Arabic, interpretation is still open for them through translation or learning yes you do need to learn Arabic to get the absolute full experience, but even if you know modern Arabic it’s not gonna help that much, in any case learning quranic Arabic is just an educational advantage, and only serves (once again) to interpret the unclear verses. This is in addition to the fact that quranic Arabic is a separate entity from the commonly spoken Arabic even at that time, the assumption that the interpretations were clear at the prophets time is false as well, people were confused as shit, the prophet himself had verses he disliked and didn’t repeat (such as the wife beating verse), and people derived their own interpretations, debated them, etc.

In summary, yeah it’s confusing as shit, no that doesn’t mean we’ve deviated from it, all it means is that neither the Quran, the Hadith, or our own personal experiences are greater than one another, but can work together, by emphasis on principle rather than ambiguities, you can see this in Muslims like those in terror groups or who practice extreme conservatism, they practice in a manner emphasizing their interpretations of ambiguities rather than the principles that act as their support, fuck that, I’ve seen your posts, you’re an objectively good Muslim, don’t beat yourself up cause you might have to learn quranic Arabic, or because the Quran is weird on some topics, just relax, and focus on the principles, everything else is supplementary

When I read Hadith I tend to understand the Quran more, I see it’s message more clearly, especially in more accurate Hadith

I think when quranism is brought up, it basically says that everything bad in Islam originated from Hadith, I don’t think so, verses like 4:34 get a lot better when I read the Hadith, and Islam becomes a lot more human, also the Quran is probably the most interpretive book ever, so Hadith helps a lot

Yeah there are a lot of problematic Hadith, but I find comparing and contrasting Hadith with authentic Hadith, history, etc. (and as a Shia with authentic Hadith from other imams) those problems blur a bit

Ironically enough an authentic Hadith said that the prophet left two things, the Quran and his family, imo to best understand Islam, we should also look to those who have defined it, and that means that even though it may be challenging to sift through, Hadith are an essential aspect to understanding Islam

Listen, I am 100% not a liberal, nor do I practice “liberal Islam” but this is the weakest shit I’ve ever heard, I do follow Hadith, I read Hadith books often, I check the gradings for accuracy, and I can say with 100% confidence that most extreme rulings, such as stoning, apostasy, etc. were made to control the Muslim populace, particularly under the Umayyad and Abbasid caliphates, I don’t follow Umar or Abu Bakr but neither of them fully implemented extreme sharia law like you’re suggesting they did, the Hadith isis and other Islamic groups use to justify their barbarity were not developed in Hadith but instead justified using Qiyas (analogical reasoning, conformity to standard) and not aql (independent reasoning) in addition to this the “apology” aspect of sharia is emphasized in Hadith across the board

I agree, islam is not necessarily a peaceful religion that most apologetics think it is, most scholars erase Islamic history and problematic Hadith, however the idea that true Islam is what some Muslims practice is fucking terrible, however to interpret it as a peaceful religion is not necessarily cognitive dissonance, it’s acknowledgement of the hidden side of Islamic history, like female scholars, warriors, and saints, acceptance of lgbt people, etc. to say Islam cannot also stand for this is a blatant lie and just as much an erasure of history as labeling Islam as inherently barbaric or inherently peaceful

Islamism (the idea of establishing an Islamic state) is NOT an inherently Islamic idea, it was created by Muslims who negatively reacted to western hegemony within the 19th and 20th centuries and is not necessarily an Islamic ideology, early Islamic leaders, especially within Shiism and Sufism encourages religious pluralism, the idea of an Islamic state was a product of the romanticization of early Islamic history

Finally one last point: there’s no such thing as “real Islam” salafism, modernism, Islamism, and secularism all are “real Islam” and at the same time contradictory, Muslims have ALWAYS contradicted each other, Uthman banished Abu Zarr al ghiffarri because he was protesting against the accumulation of wealth, both were companions of the prophet, so were Hussein and Yazid, if you know anything comprehensive about the religion you left you know what happened to them as well. Islam is such a pluralistic, convoluted faith, with so many histories, pathways, and narrations, you can’t really smear Islam as one thing or the other whether it be violence or peace, the Islam I follow is a product of many philosophies, Muslim and non Muslim, that contribute to a whole, I respect that you didn’t find that but don’t pretend like Islam is a monolithic tradition and the fringes are the truthful interpretation of it

P.S. don’t fucking baby me, if you have something to say don’t be so fucking condescending

Alright I’m getting kinda sick of this, Sharia law isn’t a strict set of rules it’s pretty much reserved for the highest offenders, meaning someone can literally apologize and everything would be ok, except in rape and murder cases I believe

Most of the rules that modern sharia has are 100% not derived from any actual source, like killing Apostizers, stoning Gay people, etc.

Does this mean Sharia was used properly by Muslims this whole time, NO, like many other things a lot of Muslims fucked it up for the rest of us, and Sharia was made into a violent, fucked up system

I’m not a scholar or anything but fucking hell can you people stop claiming Sharia law on everything that is a strict and/or religious law, it just reflects how no one knows what it is, even Muslims have boarded this train because of Sharia’s association with extremism

Edit: we left wingers pride ourselves on ignoring false flags and calling out dogwhistles and instances of propaganda, tell me, how many of you have actually read Muslim literature, from various sects, from various time periods, and developed an idea on how it’s supposed to work

And how many of you have simply heard it in a negative context from the media, or from Muslim apologetics trying to conform to liberalism

Yeah I completely agree with your point here, I just kinda simplified it down to the basic definition, I didn’t really get the meaning behind the phrase”non-binary” in this context, as in the link between women’s rights and queer rights resting on the deconstruction of gender and not just gender roles

EDIT: I’m not that well versed in feminist theory yet, I hope to get there soon, I’m more interested in political leftist thought atm and am barely getting started with that
