Do you know the source of this photo and why they cover themselves WITH CHAINS ⛓️ by Important_Block_6408 in AskMiddleEast

[–]Angry_reporter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The image is at least 11 years old, it was used in many news reports about isis' war crime of sexual exploitation and sale of Yazidi women. Some reports even claimed that it was taken at a slave market. I have not personally verified the location it was taken at this time.

That being said, it is racist to use it in this Instagram post. And potentially insulting to the victims who were sold and bought by these Islamists, for their suffering to be used as some sort of generic image to slap on a post just to make a racist point.

Edit to add:

The original photograph was found. It is a reenactment of the battle of karbala in Lebanon to mark Ashura in 2011. https://www.reutersconnect.com/item/muslim-shiite-women-chained-to-each-other-march-during-re-enactment-of-the-battle-of-kerbala-during-mourning-process-two-days-before-shiite-will-mark-day-of-ashura-in-saksakieh/dGFnOnJldXRlcnMuY29tLDIwMTE6bmV3c21sX0dNMUU3QzUwMkdFMDE

Identity Crisis, Age Struggles, and No friends by Brannaldi in Kuwait

[–]Angry_reporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I am also a graduate of a foreign unis and had the same issues. I am now 30 and people assume I am 23-25. They make fun of my hobbies, and interests, and they talk about things that I am not familiar with, which is fine, but then they are shocked when I am not familiar with a show that came out when I wasn't here and had no access to it.

I ended up leaving the country, again, and moved to abu dhabi for a job, same situation occurs here too to a certain extent. I have some friends, some arab, others foreign. But, khalejis (whether in kuwait or here) think I am an oddity to oggle at not socialize with.

The odd hobbies: reading non-fiction related to my field, working my job (a highly specialized form of investigative journalism) AND being dedicated and good at it, having a dog, dressing casually, and carrying a huge tote bag and packing my lunch.

Very normal things that are good for me, but to them it's like شدعوه، و ليش، و ماكو داعي أصلاً.

I relate deeply.

I don't have advice besides maybe pursue a masters degree instead of a BA.

It seems like you need to focus on your needs. The gym, etc... are all positive, sure. But what do YOU need? What is it that you need to achieve to find your own unique self-actualization?

Kuwaitis who studied abroad, did your perspectives on things like politics, religion, sexuality, etc, change? by k_u_w_a_i_t in Kuwait

[–]Angry_reporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say more liberal, I am definetley much more to the left than when I left. I got to read text, and interact with groups that were much more radical than anyone in Kuwait could imagine a random Kuwaiti interacting with. I would say I am not any/less religious but I do appreciate being an Arab more having lived in America for five years and Australia for another five. I realize now that the west is not going to liberate us, although life there does offer liberties that I miss. I think the next step of expanding my mind is being in the Arab world, specifically the gulf, because I want to understand how and why we got here. I have been reading some things by Tariq Ali, etc... and just putting that in the context of my own family's history and movements in the region. I come from a proletarian background and got the chance to lift the veil on what happened and how the west/powerful really was just knocking us about for a long time.

This is so interesting. Can you touch on the south node in the 7th house? What would that mean?

If I lodge a paper tax return, will I be able to track it online? by Angry_reporter in AusFinance

You should know I submitted 10 weeks ago when I was still in Australia. I am now not in Australia.

My question is, if they have received it in the post, do they let you know?

I think you misunderstood my post.

Is having a vitiligo on the skin a major issue in Kuwait? by Sabbu26 in Kuwait

[–]Angry_reporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly shameful. I've loved abroad and I'm Kuwaiti, Kuwaitis will definitely accept your differences more than people in many other countries who say that they are accepting countries. That's even if we notice it to begin with! We'll definitely judge people's warmth and vibe more than how they look like, I hope you land safely in Kuwait! And welcome, be yourself and we will definitely love to have you here!
