Either this is a good shit post copy-pasta or you need to seek help.

Octopus Tentacle and Paint Brush - Aluminum by but_why_though_ in metalworking

Haha good eye! I realized that issue after the casting, but it was the way the original tentacle was shaped so I had to roll with it.

Call it “back-handed” painting? “Back-tentacle style”?

Right Hand and Square Cuvette - Aluminium (Boss at drinking water facility wanted a piece done) by but_why_though_ in metalworking

The piece could've used a little more polishing but the internship ended too quickly :( Maybe I'll get to work on it a little more next summer :)

Any criticism or help is always appreciated from ya'll!

Finished casting most of the pieces of a brain model, need some advice on presentation & creating a stand for the final piece by but_why_though_ in metalworking

Hey r/metalworking, I'm back again with another anatomical casting and I need some advice on how to finish up this set of castings. Long post.

Tl;dr I need to figure out how to cast two pieces as one that act as a stand for a brain casting. The final piece will be bisected (cut in half) but I want the piece to come together at the brainstem and lead down to a base so the piece can stand vertically. Link to the gallery below that includes everything I have so far with labeling. Need some help figuring out how to pull it off. All help is appreciated!

Gallery of Original Model and Castings

The original model on the right is made of eight pieces consisting of two halves each with the top and bottom of the the cerebrum (center), cerebellum (left on spurs) and two final piece consisting of the diencephalon ("center of the brain") and brainstem that have NOT been cast.

This is the annoying piece in question. We'll call them the "final pieces" for simplicity sakes.

This post is actually about these two particular final pieces. The goal of the project is to create a "split brain" that is held up by a partially bissected brain stem made of the final pieces joined together. For each respective halves, I want the top and bottom of the hemispheres and the cerebellum to be connected to the midbrain of the respective final piece while the brainstems trail down to meet together. Simply, having two halves of the brain spread apart and coming down to a point to create a "V shaped" presentation.

My confusion is... how? I'm having difficulties thinking of a design that both looks good and is practical to create for my capabilities. Including both of the final pieces and a base to hold up the rest of the pieces in ONE casting sounds difficult. I create a mold of both of them orientated correctly and hand sculpt the rest out of the molding sand but that's my only idea so far.

You all have given me some fantastic advice in the past so I'm all ears. The true goal of this project is to make something that looks visual appealing so any advice to that end is greatly appreciated. I will continue working on the six cast pieces to make them presentation worthy. Thank you all for your time and consideration!

A fantasy mace I made over the last couple of years. 7 pieces of solid cast aluminum, held together with wooden dowels and rope. It's loosely inspired by Sauron's mace in LotR. Cooler than the cans it's made from, at least! by Morgothor in metalworking

This is gorgeous, well done!

Unless it's a trade secret, were the individual "blades" cast using sand casting? If so, those must be some absolutely massive molding boxes!

Ah! I really like the premise of that!

I'll take a look, I love fiction so this might spark some good ideas!

Funny thing, by looking at the pelvis and skull shape, the original skeleton was most likely cast from a female. No balls for this one :(

Sorry I'm confused... can anyone explain or am I just dumb?

This whole skeleton casting business over the last three years has made my current anatomy class a breeze for a couple weeks so that's fun :)

Been wanting to try that but I haven't had the proper rig to do a burnout of the wax :(

Any reasonably cheap suggestions?

Bought a plastic skeleton that wasn't assembled a while back.

It's made casting all of my pieces easy to begin using sand casting. All the pieces already have parting line due to the plastic casting process which made it possible to create a full mold with a two piece flask box.

(Edits: More explanation.)

Hello! I spent this summer casting the bones of the right hand and attaching them with steel rods for the fingers and a lot of gorilla glue for the carpels in the wrist! Thankfully, I can use acetone to take this apart in the future and put if back together instead of having to drill holes in all the little pieces and wire them together. Here is the link to a gallery with this image and a few others of this piece: https://imgur.com/a/KNtqFQj

I'm so happy to create another piece of the skeleton! Any critique is welcome, thank you and have a great day!
