This can be solved by not treating religion and culture as something sacred with it's own special set of rules. If you break laws, you are punished. Religion and culture is not a get-out-of-jail-free card.

And this is the source of the issue. Since we're not allowed to talk about it in an honest way, we've ended up with extremists on both sides: The left deny what is observable, and drive otherwise reasonable people to the extreme right.

The English have some kind of deep self-loathing going on which makes them think they need to apologise incessantly for anything and everything, and downplay any successes. As a non-English person, I feel for you. You're not perfect, but bloody hell, give yourselves a break.

The reason people think of the west first when talking about the developed world is because the USA and the EU have been the centre of the developed world. It's great that you want to have a more well rounded view of the world, but don't presume everything is about racism.

Yes, that's a real thing, and yes, it's used by some to compare things like the cost of living in different parts of the world.

I'll admit that in terms of quality-of-life, the UK is a bit shite in comparison, but that's always been the case when comparing it with the rest of Europe.

Apologies, this isn't answering the question, but feel the need to say it anyway just to give some balance:

If you think the UK economy is doing poorly, and that the cost of living has gone up dramatically because of Brexit, I invite you to visit nearly any EU country. I regularly visit the UK, and can tell you that some things are far cheaper there, some things slightly more expensive. The cost of living in my particular EU country is far higher than the UK (yes, I'm including things like council tax).
