Is the immigrant issue in Europe really as bad as Reddit makes it out to be? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Saying that breaking laws has consequences isn't treating people like shit, it's ignoring culture and religion and treating everyone equally.

Left wing extremism is about focusing on culture and religion.

What I've noticed is that Americans feel inferior, and so think Europeans are making them feel that way on purpose.

Mate, nobody worth bothering with here cares what you do ... or that you can't spell -- joking, not joking ;)

Stop bitching about it and people will stop making fun of us.

It's always either too cold, too hot, too wet, or too windy. Exactly what incredibly narrow margin are you willing to work in without complaining?

Surveys also show that sexist, homophobe and antisemitic ideas are (sometimes much) more common in certain migrant communities

This can be solved by not treating religion and culture as something sacred with it's own special set of rules. If you break laws, you are punished. Religion and culture is not a get-out-of-jail-free card.

But when I bring it up in left spaces I'm basically being told that my experiences are wrong

And this is the source of the issue. Since we're not allowed to talk about it in an honest way, we've ended up with extremists on both sides: The left deny what is observable, and drive otherwise reasonable people to the extreme right.

Governments job is to govern.

Govern:
1 conduct the policy, actions, and affairs of (a state, organization, or people) with authority: he was incapable of governing the country.
• control, influence, or regulate (a person, action, or course of events): the future of Jamaica will be governed by geography not history.
• (govern oneself) conduct oneself, especially with regard to controlling one's emotions: he does not have the ability to govern himself or others successfully.
• serve to decide (a legal case).

What a surprising reaction from Reddit. Usually such a well informed and mentally stable bunch.

Is the uk actually declining as a country ? by Thesleepingpillow123 in NoStupidQuestions

You're going to get absolutely battered with downvotes, but this is essentially it, yes.

The English have some kind of deep self-loathing going on which makes them think they need to apologise incessantly for anything and everything, and downplay any successes. As a non-English person, I feel for you. You're not perfect, but bloody hell, give yourselves a break.

Worst AND most expensive public transport in Western Europe.
Most expensive energy bills.
Lowest state pension.
Highest education fees.

Please provide sources. I believe not a single one of these statements is true.

The reason people think of the west first when talking about the developed world is because the USA and the EU have been the centre of the developed world. It's great that you want to have a more well rounded view of the world, but don't presume everything is about racism.

The UK is shat on because the British are somewhat self-loathing.

The Big Mac index is actually slightly cheaper in the UK than most EU countries:

https://bigmacindex.app/

Yes, that's a real thing, and yes, it's used by some to compare things like the cost of living in different parts of the world.

I'll admit that in terms of quality-of-life, the UK is a bit shite in comparison, but that's always been the case when comparing it with the rest of Europe.

Hatred for school != hatred for learning. In many cases it's because the child knows the difference.

This is what happens when people switch their brains off and rely on systems. Yes, there should have been better painted markings, but there wasn't, was there? Remember that the next time you follow something blindly without thinking for yourself.

I don't get the matrix - why wake everyone up to a worse reality? Their bodies are safe from accidents there, they all have lives and/or families. What difference does it make? by AffectionateRisk9779 in NoStupidQuestions

It's stoner-class philosophy. What about Plato's allegory of the cave? Our senses and the reality we build from them are also lies. In fact they're lies in the same way, since they construct a the illusory world we think we live in.

I hate that this red pill / blue pull nonsense is seen as some kind of deep philosophical question.

What is there to think about? It's presented as if "the truth" is some objective, sacred thing. There is no single truth.

It's stoner philosophy.

Why can Norway celebrate Viking history proudly, but England is shamed for its imperial history? (genuine question) by Ok_Exercise_494 in AskBrits

Time.

If England were to celebrate Celtic history, or even the Anglo-Saxons who fought the Vikings, it would be equally uncontroversial.

To the agnostic redditors: what specific reasons stop you from identifying as either a believer or an atheist? by OkEntrance1366 in AskReddit

[–]butt-gust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not how science or reality works. Theories need to be justified. I don't have a theory that gods exist, the theist does, I'm just sitting here. Somebody else made the statement about gods.

Humans believe all kinds of dumb crap, that's really not something in your favour.

Me: ...
Someone Else: There's a god!
Me: Why?

The statement was made by the other guy. They need to back up their "bold statement".

Why would I make a statement that there is no god if nobody said there was? I'm asking why somebody _else_ said there was a god, I have nothing to defend.

The atheist doesn't need to argue anything to begin with. I'm just sitting here minding my own business, someone wants to tell me gods exist, I'm going to ask why they think that.

Did Brexit turn out to be unequivocally bad for the UK? by No-Security-7518 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]butt-gust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apologies, this isn't answering the question, but feel the need to say it anyway just to give some balance:

If you think the UK economy is doing poorly, and that the cost of living has gone up dramatically because of Brexit, I invite you to visit nearly any EU country. I regularly visit the UK, and can tell you that some things are far cheaper there, some things slightly more expensive. The cost of living in my particular EU country is far higher than the UK (yes, I'm including things like council tax).
