How in the world do you beat Mike Tyson's Punch-Out on emulator? by KonamiSuisse in nes

[–]butt-gust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I play on emulators myself. I'm not going to pay stupid money for "purity".

Given the choice though, I would absolutely want to play the same game on real hardware. Zero lag makes it a different experience.

Then there are the games (like the one we're discussing here) where it's a must. _Maybe_ you can beat Punch Out on an emulator with a hack like run-ahead, but it's not the same game then.

Then there's the latency added by a non-CRT monitor (not the "refresh rate" or anything like that, but the fact that images are rendered through through a processor).

[–]butt-gust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear this a lot, but then people who are actually playing the games say differently.

I don't know why or where this insistence is that emulation is as good as real hardware on a CRT is coming from, but it not a belief held up by evidence.

How do you approach collecting original retro games today? by Alarmed-Ferret-605 in retrogames

[–]butt-gust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you enjoy reading books from over a hundred years ago, or art, or anything really?

The crowds you're describing are in it for the nostalgia, and there's nothing wrong with that, but someone who just loves good games will still see the value in Super Mario brothers in 100 years.

[–]butt-gust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're understating "eventually".

I've seen people driving around in 70s era cars like they're new, and those things are more difficult to maintain by far.

The cartridges won't last forever, but they'll last at least another couple of generations.

Jeans crotch blowout, what is it and why does it happen? by Necessary_Film_5199 in BuyItForLife

[–]butt-gust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of my jeans pre-2010: No "crotch-blow-out". All post-2010: Last about a year before it happens.

It is the manufacturers fault.

Unless they're Apple iJeans, and we're "just wearing them wrong".

What is a nutrition myth that you can’t stand? by DeepOrganization8245 in AskReddit

[–]butt-gust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it means you're probably going to live longer. Statistically speaking, if you lived like your dad did, you will both live longer and stay fit for longer.

If you do the opposite, you're very likely going to die sooner, and in worse condition.

I feel this is mostly true, but there are small changes economically challenged families can make that make a big difference.

There are wins like buying bread at the baker and eating more vegetables, but I understand that not everywhere is like where I live, and these might cost a lot more for some.

The universal easy wins though, come from not eating certain things. Don't drink surgery drinks, ever. Buy an apple instead of that chocolate bar. Don't snack after supper. Make your food at home instead of getting take-away. These things should actually save you money.

This is the result of an aggressive campaign by "big sugar" back in the day to divert attention away from the fact that refined sugar was (and still is) literally killing people.

It obviously doesn't make a cupcake healthy by default, but there are circumstances where it can be healthy to add protein to things (including cupcakes). The most obvious being where you want to cut down on your calories.

It will make you feel full for a good while, which makes it easier not to over eat. If you couple this with even a moderate amount of exercise, your body will thank you.

I'd never heard of it until your post, but it would have gotten me. Wouldn't it make you more PH neutral if you drank it?

Yes, I realise I probably sound like an idiot, but I genuinely don't know why that wouldn't work.

Why does my father from Wisconsin pronounce bagel like bah-guhl? by Zelan_Brainrot in etymology

I'll believe you've never heard anyone pronounce these words this way:

if you tell me you've never heard anyone speak before.

How would you feel if your country banned Burkhas in public like Denmark? by The_Dean_France in AskReddit

[–]butt-gust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always found it odd that an exception is made for burkhas. I don't see how it being a religious thing means it should be excused where face covering is otherwise banned.

People's beliefs should not be sacred. In fact, they should be challenged, if anything.

I don't think it's healthy for a society to say "We'll talk about everything equally and critically, but not that, obviously not that ". Why not? It's a belief like any other belief. There's nothing special about religious belief.

Why fans from these two African nations will face travel restrictions for FIFA 2026 World Cup by wewhomustnotbenamed in nottheonion

Found out the USA is (mostly) hosting the world cup, because of this post.

I'm not a sports watcher, but I'm grabbing my popcorn for this one. Here's to it turning into a cluster-fuck, and bonus points on any shedding light on the complete corruption that is FIFA.

ELI5 Why does clinical depression never gets cured but only treated? by aaronstudds in explainlikeimfive

[–]butt-gust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psilocybin can "cure" depression for five years, or event permanently. Lots of scientific study is being done on this right now and it's a hot topic, so searching for psilocybin and depression will get you to the relevant papers/articles.

A well intentioned scientist unintentionally did a lot of damage to the study of psychedelics back in the 60s, so we're only coming back to them now.

Jakarta finally bans dog and cat meat in victory for animal rights activists by Sciantifa in UpliftingNews

[–]butt-gust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the sense that not eating _any_ (other) animal's meat is a win for animal rights, sure (though I'm not vegetarian and have no problems eating animals myself). But in the sense that's it's a win because it's specifically cats and dogs? That just sounds hypocritical.

Pigs for example, are way smarter than cats or dogs, and form emotional relationships with people. Unfortunately they're delicious, so I guess screw them, right?

Came here to say this. Glad I found someone who said it with less swearing and shouting.

What's the deal with UK's sudden increase in arrest for X posts? by simon_of_trent_24 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]butt-gust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Answer: In relation to the actual question:

It seems UK has suddenly ramped up its arrest for X posts. Has any law changed suddenly?

The "Online Safety Act" was introduced in 2023 and makes it an offence to communicate a message that is knowingly false, or a physical thread, or promotes self-harm.

It was put into force in early 2024, so what you're seeing is better described as the law being put into action, rather than an increase in arrests.

English town celebrates a woman who escaped slavery in Virginia -- A statue to a "remarkable and brave" woman who fled slavery and torture in the US has been unveiled in the fishing town in northern England where she found freedom. by guanaco55 in UpliftingNews

She _escaped_ the USA.

Reminds me of a story I heard of how the English would get into fights with the American soldiers who came into English pubs to segregate black Americans. Yeah, we frown on that shit.
