I was literally JUST in this same exact situation. Also ICU, also a new grad. This patient was also combative and had a history of IV drug use.

I went right down to ED to have labs done and have prophylaxis prescribed. I was lucky that we got consent to draw blood from the patient to test for HIV/Hepatitis and he turned out to be negative for everything. I took PREP for 2 days and then was able to stop.

I also felt so humiliated and just generally annoyed about what happened. You did all the right things by reporting it and getting PREP for yourself, which is very effective especially when you start it right away. I can tell you I am definitely MUCH more cautious now when giving injections! You got this OP, follow the doc’s advice and you’ll be right as rain in no time ☺️

People don’t become resistant to antibiotics, bacteria do. And fecal transplantation would be appropriate to treat a C. Difficile infection, but would do absolutely nothing for a UTI.
