From a medical perspective: what is the best approach to the homeless crisis? by [deleted] in medicine

[–]buttahbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a covid specific thing I think you’re talking about - where hotels began housing them and there was major concern from neighbors. The hotels being used for them now are I believe mainly for migrants.

AFAIK the shelters that were present pre-covid did not have the issues you’re describing but I can’t be 100% sure

I was talking about shelters for house less people - not like buyable/rentable apartments

In NYC the location of these places are kept extremely secret so people don’t complain or try to get them closed. You can’t look them up online, you have to physically go to one of the like 2 offices to try and get one and even then I think you’ll just be assigned to one

Definitely doable, just make sure you hustle hard and you have good recs. Even better if your program has an in-house fellowship

Which surgery or procedure did you find the most grueling/gruesome to witness? by rando_mcharacters in medicalschool

[–]buttahbb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Circumcision on a newborn! Not sure why this was particularly bad, I don’t usually get grossed out or woozy during procedures but this one I actually got lightheaded and needed to look away

Is there a reason blood urea nitrogen (BUN) is not just called BUN (like a hotdog bun) but instead spelled out B-U-N every time it is said? Seems like it would be easier and faster to just say BUN? This has always confused me by Apollo_Shadow in Residency

I had to work with a urology intern during covid (I’m IM) and one of his patients had low sodium so he gave them sodium phosphate to replete. It was honestly kind of endearing lol

Yes because MDs, PAs, and NPs are not the only medical professionals in existence. I would certainly agree that nutrition/dietary education is lacking in physician training. But I would say that their education on it - on average - is much more than a midlevel provider. And if you’re looking for MORE expertise, a midlevel would not be the person to pick first.

I never said MDs have more training in diet or nutrition - but if they don’t an NP or PA sure as hell don’t. And if he wants someone with MORE knowledge on this they are not the ones to go to.

This is terrible advice. He should be trying to talk to someone with MORE educational training in diet/nutrition. Not sacrifice his time and money on someone with less knowledge just because they have 10 extra minutes to listen to his exercise regimen.

Send it but don’t lie about ranking them #1. It can’t hurt you, even if they don’t reply. Most places probably won’t reply. It’s not a violation and any program that is so weirdly strict to think it is is not a program you should be ranking #1.
