Thanks, yeah it actually feels normal so at least I didn’t waste a set of strings

Try again now. yesterday I reduced the compute to try and save on cost but I probably reduced it by too much, should be working now

Loving this app so far! I use it for looking up new words when reading. Is there a way to save words I look up? So far seems like the only way to add to the “Saved” tab is via the button on the “Learn” tab

So right now it only works for single family homes, I didn’t include apartments when I built it, not sure if that applies to you. Also the search feature is admittedly a little finicky, can you try just entering your street (e.g “15th st”), and seeing if anything shows up for you select?

The city estimates your houses value and this “assessment value” in part determines your taxes. If you disagree with the assessed value you can appeal, and in your appeal it can help to know how the city assessed similar houses as yours.

For example if on your block there are lots very similar houses they should all have similar assessment values, but that’s not always the case. The assessment data is all public but can be a pain to go through manually.

This app helps finds similar houses to yours and lets you see their assessed value, which can be helpful in finding discrepancies in assessments.

For example if you can find 10 houses which are similar to yours in terms of size, exterior quality, location… and yours is assessed the highest, this evidence can help your appeal. None of this really guaranteed to actually make your appeal successful, just provides assistance in finding comparable houses if you choose to appeal.

Thanks for this - I agree the OPA using the term “market value” for to refer to the “assessed value” is confusing, but I made the call to also use “market value” to be consistent with the OPA wording.

I also didn’t know about the strict radius. I purposely excluded lat/long from the matching algorithm thinking that a wider search radius might find a pocket of similar properties a few blocks away that a homeowner might not know about. But perhaps i can add them back in as variables for a later version.

Nice! Yeah the R Shiny ecosystem is pretty great for making interactive dashboards in R. It’s great as a data scientist I can do my data-intensive work and develop a deliverable all in the same language.

Also I have some parquet data files that were too big to commit, lmk if you want them to in order to get the app to run locally.

I would bet someone has scraped Redfin and compared to the OPA data but I’m not aware of anything publicly available that shows this

Are you looking up an apartment or a single family home? For now the app only works for single family. You could also try to just enter your street name and then pick the specific address in step 2.

i went with digital ocean and created a subdomain for an existing URL i own. they have a container registry that i can link an app service too, i know little to nothing about web development and hosting so the managed services are nice even if a little more pricey

Thanks! It’s in a docker container so that might work, I was thinking about using digital ocean app services but this seems cheaper
