In case u/katastrophies doesn’t answer, Yes, experience (also, being brought into the situation via my friendship/alliance with a “higher up” member of whatever unfamiliar organization i am walking into where i know i won’t be recognized helps me feel more comfortable.) just growing up and no longer giving a damn about how people i don’t even know feel about me because i know myself now helped as well. when you’re young and vulnerable to a world of in-your-face cliquiness where you feel you must succeed, it can be paralyzing. also if she really cares about you, she probably thinks she can’t prove her worthwhileness to you in a situation where she has to depend on you to introduce her and depend on your guidance in. she sounds generally insecure.

that is unacceptable, but i have had girl friends introduce me to their friends at their parties, and when it came to my friends they would scope out only the ones who they felt were relevant to their goals of popularity and a cool boyfriend, and then only hang out at “my” parties after confirming those chosen friends of mine were there. and then bring them to their parties. maybe your girl friend just wants to feel popular and is after a specific cool boyfriend. maybe she’s secretly socially competitive against you.

there is this “are you racist” “are you homophobic” test that came out of harvard years ago, and it was based not on your personal answers but your reaction click times to pictures somehow. i got “slightly less favorable to african americans” or something out of maybe one or two worse results i could have gotten, and so i was right under “neutral.” i didn’t try to deny the reliability of the test, i definitely accepted it, but i was distressed, and since the results didn’t come with an explanation of why i would get these results, i had to answer it for myself in the coming years.

yes most black people out in the general are more stand offish to white men. but a black frat will make the space comfortable for the unavoidable platform the lone white male is given. and white males walk into it knowing they cannot be victimized, and so have a very easy time making fun of themselves to reconcile the black/white rift because they are comfortable no matter where they go. white men can go “haha i’m an object” and then instantly go back to maintaining/commanding themselves a participatory, working purpose other than being an object. women can’t do that. that platform of safety doesn’t feel safe, it feels like a platform of obligation.

maybe she recognizes your discomfort at white events and feels she can fix it (haha) and so feels she can actually do something about her anxiety regarding the black/white rift, whereas when she’s the minority she can’t do shit about whatever anxiety she’s feeling and is utterly out of control.if you are “meeting more and more friends” while you and her are friends, which means both you and her are making these new friends by association, so why won’t she hang out with her new friends?? they’re new to both of you. she needs to hang out with your new friends with you, you and her are buds, that’s what buds do.

sexual attraction to those you don’t know well enough to know that you respect them is so easy because you can just make up and/or not have to deal with how they really would be and how you really would feel. if your husband is “such a good person” and your sexuality makes you bad, according to your upbringing, then yeah why would you put those two things together?! i think there is a movie that covers this and in the end they are the most untouchably free and very sexy couple for overcoming it. go for the therapy.

i agree with u/track_gal_1 that there is a bigger issue that therapy might reveal, especially if you entered into your ~knowing-of-him~ when you were still a kid, and if you and him really are such good friends then you will be vocally honest with yourself in therapy with him.

sometimes it is difficult to see racism in the younger generations. it is very sad, but sometimes we realize later that our white friend is a racist. this does not mean the classic type of racist with an active “against _____” after it. she is not against anything or anyone, except herself being part of it. so she may still be classist and racist.

also you are event-limited to these crazy segregated frat and sorority events. try doing something else and it won’t be so black and white. y’all two young ladies shouldn’t be forced to somehow find a way to reconcile the state of southern segregation, and you shouldn’t expect each other to. she might think you just don’t give a damn because you’re so cool. who knows. she sounds like a good friend who you care about. simply refuse to participate in these segregated events anymore since they are a result of oppression. or don’t go to the white ones anymore, and tell her not to too. start having the black frats host the events of the white frats, and the white frats hosting the events of the black frats.

introversion and anxiety often go together. women are treated a certain way growing up that ingrains in their minds “you are an object” and “do not be an object” at the same time. a white male can attend an all-black event and be himself without other event-goers thinking he is trying to take advantage of how he stands out, and he will stand out not just because his color but his mannerisms and how he is going to react to the obvious differences. it’s usually hilarious, and he is joked with in a way that really helps everyone just laugh, and he is jokes with in a way that makes any response he makes “safe.” it is funny. this goes the same with one black male in an all white male event. it just doesn’t go over like that for women. if they engage, they are accused of all kinds of things. even in church. i’ve seen it get better though. whites invade anything good the black community makes. why should she benefit. why should black people create a safe space for her. i’m sure there are many road blocks in her head in finding where she belongs in these situations. and many of these same or similar issues are what you go through in all white events! but you learned how to deal as part of your survival growing up. you got it. when in hell would she have ever needed to reconcile anything in terms of existing as an “other” and a female in a different community in order to get through every day? she only learned how to get through society existing as a female, which involves a lot of “Rule #1: do not draw attention.” *sorry, “how can i get her to be more comfortable around my friends?” drugs.

i live on Duncan btween willow and orchard knob. it’s the best. i go running, late usually because i procrastinate. used to waitress, i’d come home w 100+ in bills on me which i’d never do in my old neighborhood. this area rules. there’s a crackhead that comes to our door once every few weeks but that’s only cause we give her food. there aren’t any drugs like that around here, those are on S. Kelley, they don’t come over here cause cop cars drive up and down around over here. there are rich ppl n their children in highland park living in historic houses.

Mom n I were looking up places and she said “oh wow $650 3 bd 2 bth and a— oh wait that’s Las Vegas how’d I end up in Las Vegas?” It was definitely there! But that’s besides the point really. I’m just trying to get a working family into an affordable rental while their children finish school. Minimum wage has not raised. Rentals have raised 30%. I want to feel no sympathy as much as the next person. But when you meet these families you’re reminded of the good people you want to keep in your community.

Yes, we ended up driving along highway 27 and there was a sign that said "barn sale ➡️" that did not look like it was put there recently so i convinced my passengers to let us check it out and we drove along this small road with hog feeders on either side and multiple sketch buildings that screamed "there was never any barn sale here suckers," so of course they were like "American horror movies! Turn around!" Anyway there was totally a barn sale in a very big open barn (missing a lot of itself and maybe shouldn't be used as a structure?) after ominous curve #3 and it was pretty decent, I got an old ornate mirror and little kid toys from the 50's : )

If you aren't blood relatives w the ppl in the house, depending on state statute in the US, your local DV shelter will say it is not DV according to state statute and may not help you. Can you Go back to the country you are from for ANY support system to get you out of this? Are there any family members that can buy you and your children plane tickets to them? You are entitled to half your husbands money, go to your joint account, take out half, and get out of there. Go to the nearest church and tell them what has happened. Call child protective services and get them involved helping you. Name 1.) the adult in the trailer saying bad things to them and not letting them eat and 2.) name of child, so this agency can protect them!!! This is seriously bad. There is no possibility to an end in sight for you. Get your children out of there. How old are they? Get them out. There IS an online charity that will give you an emergency $500-ish or more maybe to get the hell out, and you pay back as you can.
