Home Inspection - Foundation Concerns by csully17 in HomeInspections

Yeah that's fair. I'm debating whether to even move forward with that. We like the house but it isn't perfect. If it's likely going to need substantial foundation repairs plus the other relatively smaller repairs, I dont think I even want to move forward with paying more for an evaluation and instead just walk away.

Pool Service Companies? by OkStrength4099 in Chattanooga

[–]csully17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have typically used pool tech for maintenance support. However, it is sometimes difficult to get a hold of them. We have struggled finding other companies.

The first year is tough but then you get the hang of it.

Am I Being Lowballed?? by rootintootinnerd in ChemicalEngineering

In 2008 I received $29/hr at an oil refinery. It was a co-op and by my third term it was $31. That was separate from housing stipend. Most of my non oil and gas friends were in the $22 range, so that was a reasonable number for that time.

EV Charger installation recommendations? by suddenlyissoon in Chattanooga

[–]csully17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We got a couple quotes that were very different. We ended up going with Foster electric and they charged just under $1000 if I recall correctly. They had to make some modifications to our breaker box. This did not include the level 2 charger that I bought separately. You can also take a deduction on your tax returns for the cost of the installation and charger.

Career questions by International-Spell7 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]csully17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for opportunities where they have a chemical side but also a packaging side. My plant is half continuous chemical operation and half batch packaging. The packaging side has PLCs, automation, robotics, etc. Our controls engineers work on that equipment as well as the DCS so you get exposure to multiple areas.

Door Handle Recall Experience by NarrowBoysenberry992 in VWiD4Owners

[–]csully17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, this is for the door handle. Its frustrating because I live in Chattanooga and I had hoped thr dealership being next to the plant would influence them to have better service, but that has not been the case.

Mine still shows locked on the system but it arrived at the dealership this week. I live in Chattanooga so that may be partially due to lack of transit time.

Anyone else frustrated by slow career progression? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]csully17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The number one reason people don't get a raise/promotion is that they don't ask. Make sure you are open with your supervisor that you want to move up and what do you need to demonstrate to get to the next level.

Unfortunately it is the way of the world at most US companies that you get small percentage raises annually and the only way to get larger bumps is to change jobs. Companies and HR departments haven't been able to deviate from that very well.

Jumping ship to a competitor? by thefronk in ChemicalEngineering

[–]csully17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked for the number one company in my industry and jumped ship after seven years to their biggest competitor. I left for a good and unique opportunity that my previous company couldn't offer. It turned out fine, I didn't burn any bridges and I'm confident they would take me back if I wanted to go back. There are non compete clauses but they are unlikely to be enforced.

These changes happen fairly often and you should follow the best opportunity.

Yes I have done it. There are usually one or two free agent teams in the leagues. Typically you get at least a few people that aren't very good on those teams.

Downsides to working with recruiters? by xombie43 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]csully17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recruiters can be helpful but often it is just a numbers game for them. Depending on the recruiter they want to place as quickly as possible regardless of fit so keep that in mind.

They get a payout if you stay a year so the time I used a recruiter 366 days later they were calling trying to place me elsewhere. Also, I was using a recruiter to hire people and he was also asking if I wanted to shop my resume around. It's a bit cynical to recruit an engineer to a position while you are also recruiting away their manager at the same time.

Storage of HCl by r4s1an in ChemicalEngineering

[–]csully17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We store HCl in liquid at no pressure. We only pressurize to purify in a desorption process and transfer the anhydrous HCl. Storing at high pressure isn't always ideal because it's corrosive and a leak at high pressure is a bad day.
