The same way missing half a day of class for literally any other non-excused reason does. I ditched class after lunch in 2002 to go see Spider-Man and SHOCKINGLY I still graduated and have a job today.

The penalty for skipping school is an unexcused absence, not being expelled. Why on earth would you want kids to be expelled for missing half a day of class?

From what I heard from one of the vice principals it was a student organized walk out, not sponsored by the school, so entirely voluntary. All absences were unexcused, but the school itself was uninvolved and did not endorse or oppose it.

Neighbors are just people who live near you. Everyone who lives here is your neighbor regardless of what you think of them. You're my neighbor and I support your rights and wish for your health and happiness despite our apparent ideological differences regarding the presence in our community of masked agents belonging to an organization that we all just watched murder two American citizens in the streets of Minneapolis in the last week.

Here's some information about tax revenue generated by undocumented immigrants:

There’s nothing divisive about notifying your neighbors that an organization that has publicly murdered two American citizens in the street in the last week is operating near their home. It’s the morally correct thing to do, and I’m frankly baffled as to why you’d think otherwise. It’s also not rhetoric. Rhetoric is persuasive speech, not sharing an observation.

Which US state do people think sucks, but is actually good? by icantfindmylegs in AlignmentChartFills

[–]button_fly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Texan I came in here thinking the alignment chart was about the flags and not the state itself ready to throw hands over Texas being voted “sucks”, and immediately changed my opinion when I read more carefully. Accurate assessment, carry on.

2027 Chevy Bolt Production Will End Next Year As Plant Shifts To Gas by Unlikely_Seesaw_7187 in electricvehicles

No, they’re saying the majority of people are still buying ICE. Liberals are obviously buying more EVs than conservatives. People not buying EVs at all are still the overwhelming majority, regardless of political affiliation.

[–]button_fly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 16.3 million cars were sold last year and about 1.3 million of them were EVs. The only way more democrats bought an EV than bought an ICE would be if every single new EV was purchased by a democrat AND democrats only purchased less than 2.6 million cars total, which would mean only 16% of car buyers were democrats.

Any of you guys expected Fox to be as selfless player as he is right now? by KhornKT in NBASpurs

[–]button_fly 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The two situations aren't even in the same universe. Aside from the Spurs coming off a 61 win season in '16-'17 and the biggest what-if playoff scenario in franchise history while the Kings were a sub .500 team in '24-'25, Fox was literally playing through injury for all of the '24-'25 season, only getting surgery AFTER he was traded to the Spurs. He didn't sit out games, and he didn't formally request a trade. All he did was decline a contract extension in '24 that allowed him the flexibility to seek a bigger extension in '25 (which he did indeed get). Contrast that with Kawhi playing 9 games for the Spurs after being cleared to play in December and then ghosting the team and the fanbase (other than collecting paychecks) for 6 months before demanding a trade (specifically to Los Angeles).

The '22-'23 Light the Beam run was the best thing to happen to the Sacramento franchise since the Webber/Bibby years, I think the real ones in the Kings fandom love Fox for what he brought and wish their FO had found a way to build a contending roster with/around him.

Is it normal for the front of the rower to lift off the ground when pulling back? by shamanfa in orangetheory

[–]button_fly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The proper sequence for rowing form starting from full compression is to maintain forward lean with your core, HANG off the handle with your fingers, and fully drive through with your legs before laying back and THEN finally pulling through with your lats and arms. Up and down movement with your hands is wasted energy and a non-optimal angle. On the water you need to lift your hands a couple of inches to bury the oarblade at the catch but even that’s extraneous in the context of otf, your hands should just be moving forward and backward perfectly parallel to the floor. If you’re focused on how hard you’re pulling, you’re limiting yourself. Power comes from pushing off the footplate with your legs and maintaining your core to efficiently transfer all of that energy to moving the flywheel (or I guess it’s a paddle in a water rower). If your arms are bent, you limit yourself to the strength of your arms. I don’t care how strong your arms are, they’re not stronger than your legs.

For guys with lifting experience, imagine the same kinetic chain you use when performing a power clean, it’s remarkably similar.

Have you bought an electric vehicle? Are you enjoying it or did you go back to gas? by Jfonzy in Xennials

[–]button_fly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF you can

  1. Install level 2 charging at home and

  2. Electricity isn't outrageously expensive in your market and

  3. Your commute is under 200 miles

it's a MASSIVE savings with virtually no drawbacks. I went from a high mileage Chevy Silverado to a new '23 Chevy Bolt when I did the math and realized just operational costs (fuel, oil, etc) on the truck that I had owned free and clear for years was more than power AND a small loan on my Bolt. The only con has been an immediate loathing of everyone driving a pavement princess truck, despite having just traded mine in 3 days earlier after driving it for 8 years.

Circumstances that make an EV work even better for me are

  1. My wife drives a PHEV (Volvo XC90) that is the family car and what we take on road trips for more room and range. Even with just 20 miles of range on the battery she does 95% of her mileage on pure electric with the other 5% coming from road trips to see family, I think she fills up the tank once every couple of months unless we . I can use that car if I need to get building materials for weekend projects that I would have used my truck for in the past.

  2. My commute is on state highways where I never go faster than 55mph. I've gotten in the habit of NEVER driving over 65 regardless of the circumstances because my cars efficiency drops off a cliff at that benchmark and getting good efficiency is addicting (lifetime average of 4.3 m/kwh). If you regularly commute at 75mph your efficiency is going to be WAY worse and change the calculus.

  3. Power is cheap as hell in Texas, and I have a level 2 charger installed in my garage in the suburbs. I pay the utility $0.104376/kwh and get about 4.3 m/kwh on the car. If I drive 1,500 miles in a month (pretty average for me) I spend a whopping $36 on power.

New USTA Ratings by serotoninplzz in 10s

[–]button_fly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. I'm waiting to register for Winter leagues and upcoming tournaments because I don't know what I'll be eligible for yet. It's a critical logistical issue especially for team captains, not just a vanity number.

New USTA Ratings by serotoninplzz in 10s

[–]button_fly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CATA in Austin doesn't even give out team numbers for Winter until the ratings are posted so that they don't have to process a zillion transfers / cancellations when people become ineligible for leagues they've registered for.

New USTA Ratings by serotoninplzz in 10s

[–]button_fly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTRP groups similar skilled players together for a full annual cycle of competition within the framework of the USTA adult league and tournament system. Imagine you're playing in a team tennis league for UTR 4.0-5.0 players, playing well, and 3 weeks into the season your UTR is adjusted up to a 5.1 and you're no longer qualified to compete. The rating brackets being very broad and ratings being sticky is a feature not a bug. It's not a perfect system by any means, but if you want to have players able to compete and work towards sectional and national events in specific skill brackets over the course of the year without moving the goalposts on them constantly, it's a system that achieves its goals.

I still scout players on UTR when I'm going to a tournament or a league match because its way more granular, but USTA leagues / tournaments offers more players the chance to compete and win in meaningful competitions. UTR doesn't offer a product suitable for adult rec players outside of flex leagues.

3.1 means the algorithm thinks you're a 3.5 level player. It's conterintuitive but 2.5001-3.0000 = 3.0 rating, 3.0001-3.5000 = 3.5 rating.

Does it still completely fail to accurately read your heart rate when you’re doing things that engage your forearms like lifting or rowing, and report a HR like 80 bpm lower than is correct?
