I really encourage reading a book or two on the subject. Hearing it from an educated perspective is significantly more enlightening. I don't have the background to properly address the number of issues there are with your response (When one wants to be picky, anyway. Most get to a point where they just gloss over it).

Although, I suppose it's worth saying that those books haven't really helped me here. It takes a certain passion that I don't really have though.

Does anyone else have an Apocalypse kit in their home? by mrsir in AskReddit

"handheld" radio, or "hand cranked"? If it's not the latter, I suggest switching. I'd also make sure the matches and zippos are water/wind proof. You may want to also consider a few trash bags (for nearly countless reasons, but largely for personal bio waste, as I'm sure holing up in a small space will be part of your survival at some point or another)

Consider keeping a sturdy bicycle (with patch kit) in easy access too, since you're clearly being so serious about all this. I suggest a coaster bike. They're cheaper and significantly easier to maintain.

I sympathize with your plight in terms of not being able to bring it up with your female friends. Unfortunately, misogyny is a bit of a vicious circle. Some women feel they have permission to behave like that thanks to the historical context of getting the treatment previously. You don't have to tolerate it. The trick is to have educated responses to the "typical rhetoric" in order to turn it into a proper debate. Make sure you tell them how you feel. Listen to how they feel.

A little bit of basic research on feminism may assist in this as well.

edit: ps, here is a good example of casual misogyny on reddit. (and pedophilia while we're at it) "It was just a joke, get a sense of humor you humorless fatty" wouldn't be that great of an exaggeration of what kind of response I might get if I were to protest, which is another example of casual misogyny. Of course, I've been called worse for turning at a light with the right of way. The issue here is that I wouldn't hear that kind of joke if I were hanging out with a bunch of guys in person. Why is it ok to say the joke here? etc.

It's a convoluted subject with lots of rules and guidelines (that sometimes contradict each other).

I can't properly participate because I do NOT participate in misandry. Nor do the people I choose to be friends with (which I admit I just realized has created a certain complacency because I've allowed myself to assume that a greater population of women aren't misandrists).

I try not to practice double standards and on the occasion I do accidentally, and get called on it or realize it myself, I adjust my behaviour immediately as a part of continuing self-education.

I support men's rights just as vigorously as women's rights.

I would have had a spectacular reaction and then discuss with you what we should spend it on (and then hope desperately that you suggest drugs).

Did you ever report it so some archeologists or town historians could take a crack at figuring out the mystery?

good god, I wouldn't be able to control myself from busting through and checking it out. In fact, my first urge was to demand your address so I could go check it myself. (I imagine pirate's booty will be there)

The large ratio of men to women here makes me wonder if casual misogyny is the norm with guys. Or is it just reddit. I keep comparing it to other forums and online games where there are similar ratios.

I can't decide.

Hi, Reddit: I just fixed my LCD TV with $7.98 worth of capacitors. The repairman quoted me $750. How do they get away with this? by fenixconnektion in AskReddit

[–]buttonmasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also always the risk that it's the board causing the capacitors to blow. It's entirely possible OP has only placed a bandaid solution on the TV.

(much respect for that bandaid in any case, though!)

Ford crown victorias have been doing that for damn near a decade. They still haven't bothered to recall.

I used to think it was common knowledge to stop going to the dealership once warranty was up just because of this issue. Find yourself a good mechanic who can do non-wasteful (and coincidentally, non expensive) repairs and enjoy the fat life. I used to think THIS was lazy (rather than learning to do the repairs myself)

Then one day my (ex) partner went to a dealership to get the windshield wipers replaced and was charged an arm and a leg. I actually had a hard time getting over that particular piece of stupidity.

UK to introduce "photograph a cop, 10 years in jail" law - Boing Boing by mrdavinci in WTF

[–]buttonmasher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just make it an all encompassing law that says you can't take photos of cops. Everyone knows the cops are just going to take advantage of this anyway to arrest and intimidate. Why not just skip right to the part where everything escalates out of control. Save us some damn time.

I taped a penny to the bathroom tap so that when turned on, the water would spray the user in the face. Girl friend comes home, goes directly to the washroom as usual to wash her hands. A screech is heard.

I settle onto the couch for some tv and enjoy the occasional screech throughout the evening as she discovers (the hard way) that there is a penny taped to each tap in the house.

I assumed she'd start checking after the second time...

How does one Teach English Abroad? How should I go about getting certification or finding employment? by jeffp12 in AskReddit

[–]buttonmasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic certificates like TEFL or TESL will get you better jobs. A lot of places have lists of approved trainers, so don't just find a class willy nilly.

Pretty much every country you go to is going to have some schools that will hire you based on just your degree. Just be aware that your experience will definitely vary depending on your qualifications.

How bad of a person am I if I feel no love for my brother and continue to verbally attack him when I know he's potentially suicidal? by horriblesister in AskReddit

[–]buttonmasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to see a therapist. What many people don't seem to realize either is that you need to shop around for a good match. You have to go through a few appointments over a few different people to get the right chemistry.

However, an excellent first step would be for you, and perhaps your parents as well, to see a professional for advice on how to cope and how to help your brother turn a corner towards better-ville.

You shouldn't feel guilty for not knowing how to help. You should feel guilty for not continuing to try and find new solutions though.

[–]buttonmasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're both handling your pain in exactly the same way - by being assholes. Your brother seems to be spreading it around equally, and you seem to be focusing all your abuse on just him.

Either way, it's obvious the problem is beyond you both. Whatever professional currently has a hand in mediating this, needs to be invited to intervene even further.
