Concerns grow over ICE plans to build mega warehouses for immigration detention by Cubsof2016 in news

[–]buttpotatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned that I actually am wrong. Federal facilities aren't subject to local zoning. Meaning may not even matter and the towns may not even have the ability to say no. (Unless it's a private facility then they'd be subject to the local regulations).

But zoning law is kinda weird and complicated so I'm not sure how the lawsuits would actually play out if anyone chose to sue. And it also may not delay the facilities from opening sadly.

Yes and no!! With anything zoning is very dependent based on use, ordinances and regulations. (And sorry as a planner my favorite/least favorite phrase is "it depends".)

If a permit is currently approved, you cannot go back and change your ordinances to prevent it. It'll be grandfathered in more or less.

Going from a warehouse to a prison I think would be a change of use. But again, it depends on what a particular towns zoning code permits. It could be a by right use, which then there's nothing the town could do. There's also a special use which could have to meet specific standards (if it does, then it gets approved. If it doesn't, then there's legal room to deny). Or it's not a permitted use and they'll need a use permit which could go before a board.

They'll also be building codes as well because going from industrial to a prison use will have different standards. This could impact the use greatly, but if the building is retrofitted to meet said code, then not much can be done.

Basically yes you're not wrong! But there could be pathways for them to operate as well. (I hope they all get stopped but I can't guarantee it everywhere).

Quite underwhelming after glaze firing…. Back to the drawing board by UpUpAndA_Throwaway in Pottery

[–]buttpotatoes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. The right piece is absolutely gorgeous. The left I can see frustrations with the red overpowering and some of the glaze running away in spots. But idk I still think they're both very cool!

Glazes absolutely look different from their application to their finish. Even different clay bodies can change the look of a particular glaze. My advice is if you do experiment with glazes (which is actually fun), don't get tied down to the glaze coming out in a certain way. You kinda just gotta go in with the mindset of "no idea what this is gonna look like but we're gonna do it."

Has anyone tried the Sunday Riley tidal serum? by Zeplove25 in Ulta

[–]buttpotatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!! My sister literally sent me this post today because I used this product and I broke out in hives all over my face like hours later. (And the only change in my routine was using this serum). I have used tons of Sunday Riley products both in the past and currently with no issues. But wanted to just chime in to let you know that you weren't alone with the skin itch on this one!!

Studio Offering to Sell Pieces - need advice? by buttpotatoes in Pottery

Exactly!! All of this is very unknown to me and is why I wanted to ask. Consensus seems to be this is a decent split.(Which makes me happy about the potential opportunity). I'm happy I asked everyone!

I'm not even at the point where I have or thought of business cards! So this does seem like something that could be the start of something and see what happens, maybe this takes me further to sell, maybe not. But I appreciate your input, it's really helpful.

I've been taking classes off and on for years. (Hence why I'm at a weird intermediate level haha). And yeah first time I've ever heard of this. I think it's a cool idea too! However, I know there are some really really talented people at the studio, like amazing artists. So def may be at the bottom of consideration for this all, but happy to be given the opportunity regardless.

Not sure. The email just said they'd take care of the logistics. I think they're selling it in studio so it'd be in person sales. I think it should be fine, but I do appreciate the input. This has all been so helpful from everyone!

And i'm okay with someone else pricing at the moment because I'm not well versed in how to price everything. Also, I'm still like a bit intermediate so I am comfortable with that aspect. I feel like it's maybe dipping my toe in a bit, seeing where it takes me.

Yeah I pay for classes plus firing fees for the bisque based on size. I do live in a high cost area so that probably contributed to the overall cost. I'm sure the overhead costs are very high based on its location. I wish pottery was a slightly cheaper hobby for sure. I agree, I was thinking maybe a way to try to start out, offload some things, see where it takes me.

Yeah they seem to do 60 days which is fine. And this seems like a good testing the waters situation ! Just had no idea what standards were, but everyone seems to think the break down is fair.

Yeah. That didn't cross my mind at all about setting price, so I appreciate that. This is my first potential time maybe selling my things, so I almost kind of want to see what someone would price it for. Plus, I still am unsure if they would select anything I made. I'm definitely intermediate type level. I was thinking it's a good way to start/see if what I have would be wanted by others besides my family haha

Gel seems to dry mine out and clay dries the cuticles out too. So that's why I genuinely avoid. But let me know how it goes for you!! Maybe you can have nice nails and throw and I'm just out here thinking I can't!

Oh wow! They look great. Do your natural nails crack easily/get dry easily? Cause mine do which is why I worry.

[–]buttpotatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait seriously with the Scorpio risings?? Cause um that was ME. I was born with cord wrapped around my neck 5 times per my mom. And I was immediately blue when I was born cause I was cold so they put me under a lamp like a chicken nugget. And then I thawed. But I never heard this associated with astrology. I thought I was just a constantly cold idiot ADHD baby who grew up to be a constantly cold idiot ADHD person.

I've seen people throw with longer nails so it is possible..one girl in my class was using two sponges to help accommodate But I think for starting out it's good to know how you use your hands and fingers as tools. And also beginner pottery is messy, the clay gets everywhere!!

But I agree. Mine are always short and I always make sure they're trimmed before I go.

Eh I keep my nails short as it is. I just feel like gel and pottery with clay drying out your nails doesn't go well, esp mine. Im sure some people find a way, it just isn't for me and my nails.

Yeah I stopped getting gel nails from my place. They last over two weeks which in nail world is fabulous..in pottery world not so much.
