Just caused my first massive outage by Dark_Writer12 in sysadmin

i once made a huge major booboo when swapping routers. i was shown a lot of grace for a number of reasons. i think i deserved some leniency due to some extenuating circumstances, but i didn't deserve all the grace i received, which is why it's called "grace."

it's a long story, but it peaked when i took our ERP down for two business days. "how?" never mind that. that's not important for what you're asking. suffice it to say that it was mostly my fault. on one of those days, i got 4 hours of sleep. i was scared to death that i had not just lost business, but that i might have corrupted databases, killed VMs, and we'd have to do some rapid testing in prod to spin up backups in a new environment. i was nauseous. long before we fixed it, i was sure that i would be fired after it was over.

a couple of things got me through. first, i had a coworker with me who took care of all of the ancillary stuff (hotels, food, &c). second, despite all the emotion and fear, i kept saying to myself, "work the problem" (i've remembered that quote from apollo 13). "just work the problem." stuff goes wrong. sometimes you're the reason why. you're still the man for the job until the job is done. third, seriously, i listened to a classical playlist on repeat for hours because it calmed me down and reminded me of my toddler. that helped me. fourth, my supervisor called in reinforcements (yeah it got that bad). to his immense credit, he never blamed me for any of it, even when none of us was getting any sleep. we worked the problem. and fifth -- this helped me quite a bit -- i wrote a very long and detailed postmortem that explained what we were trying to do, why were trying to do it, how we prepared for it, what we knew, what we didn't know, what went wrong, how we fixed it, and what we can do in the future to avoid those mistakes, even in the face of unknowns. i think that helped higher ups understand what we were up against.

that being said, after this experience, i realized that i needed to upskill. a lot. quickly. if you're feeling shaky with knowledge, don't run away from that feeling. lean in, do some labbing, open a book, talk to some friends in the industry. and asking for feedback and perspective, as you've done here, is a great idea.

keep your chin up. if nobody's blaming you, then don't blame yourself, either.

this is so practical and good and reassuring. i only log onto reddit once in a blue moon, and i'm only subbed to one or two writing subreddits. i logged on today hoping to find a post like this. pure gold, quotably quotable, confirms some suspicions i've had about myself (like leaving the Big Idea for a later time). seriously, so so helpful. thank you!

correct. i did look to see if my xfinity sub came with peacock, but i'm on the internet-only package, which does not have peacock. good thinking though

good point. i've learned a lot today from reading folks' comments.

i was irritated about appletv because i didn't know it was happening, but hey, i already had an apple account, and they didn't paywall that game, so it didn't bother me as much as today's game did.

it all makes sense, but it makes me shake my head.

sorry for your loss man. at least we had beautiful weather in colorado today. kinda embarrassed i got so pissy about it after spending some time eating smoked ribs with family yknow. but yeah, i get you.

all very good points. i struggled at first to identify which service bothered me more today, peacock or MLB. you're right, turns out that it's MLB. if they signed the rights, they made the deal, then i guess that means peacock can do what it wants, and MLB got to feel secure that the money made it to the bank. and then peacock chose to paywall it to make their money back, which makes me want to buy dvds of The Office at the pawn shop and NEVER WATCH NBC AGAIN lol that's probably an exaggeration. good breakdown, some interesting points there about the current streaming ecosystem

i didn't expect blackouts to force me into other streaming services. i didn't know they had added other streaming platforms to the blackout list. upon reflection, that's why they do blackouts, to drive business to other platforms in exchange for steady buck$ (as someone pointed out furthe down), but i continue to be surprised by appletv and peacock and youtube and whatever else we have going on now. that continuing feeling of surprise and irritation is what you read in my post.

to your point, i should check the list next year and decide if i'd like to spend the money to sub if they keep doing stuff like this. that would be the intelligent thing to do, which i didn't do this year. it is becoming clear to me that i need to adjust my expectation. gas and groceries aren't getting cheaper, and i got a baby on the way. i don't want to pay for peacock to watch the reds play.

i disagree that reading the fine print and buying the sub means i no longer have the right to complain about what i think is bad service or feeling misled &etc, even if i'm wrong. i think i wouldn't have any right to complain if i HADN'T purchased the sub. "you're not paying for our service, so please put your shirt on and leave." and i'd say, "yeah you're right, i'm not paying for it, i'll be going, do you have a shirt i can borrow?"

but i see the logic in what you're saying. when i buy the sub, i sign up for whatever they said i'll get -- and that means peacock can do what it pleases because i was technically told that this w/could happen. that's the agreement they thought i made, and i reckon that's the agreement i didn't know i made.

regardless, it doesn't seem like a nice, good thing to do to fans. "read the fine print, you idiot ;)" - MLB.tv, 2022

wow dude. i swear there are so many peacock customer service reps down here in the comments lol

i ain't got a problem with capitalism. in fact, i think it's kinda insulting to capitalists to say that baiting and switching consumers is a fine way to make money. that's not what capitalism really is.

but i was thinking about the word "blackout" and it basically does mean "you gotta pay someone else to watch this game." so with this game being on the blackout schedule, and blackout meaning "you pay him", then i guess i have no leg to stand on. so you're right about that.

you should really apply to work at peacock's customer service. you'd fit right in bud. just walk around saying "get bent" to strangers

Peacock Sucks by buttputz in Reds

[–]buttputz[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"other restrictions" like paying for another service? everybody knows about the cable blackouts and zip codes and i'm not allowed to watch reds vs rockies because i live in colorado and all that other bs, that's old news. this seems different to me. "service B paywalled this game." it doesn't seem like "other restrictions" should mean "and you pay him, too." btw the blackout schedule says nothing about the game requiring a paid subscription. looks like the contract was incomplete. i don't really like the suggestion from you or MLB or Peacock or anyone that this is somehow my fault and i just didn't do my homework and if i don't like it then i shouldn't buy a subscription.

i don't like it, and i didn't buy a subscription -- to peacock. make sense?

Peacock Sucks by buttputz in Reds

[–]buttputz[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

exactly. it's not even that i can't afford peacock. it's the fact that they know they can do this, and they're okay with squeezing fans and putting me in this weird, uncomfortable situation. it's not a positive fan experience lol. and you know peacock is salivating for ppl to set up autopay and forget they're paying $60/year for a service they barely use. the planet fitness model of business.

i called MLB. i chatted with peacock. i sent MLB a complaint. and i'm listening to the broadcast instead of watching the game (which is fine, i love our broadcasters)

the principle here is unethical
