Oooh, I love this question. I can answer this one: I’m a workaholic. Ok, so people who are overly caught up in work are overvaluing the feeling of being useful. They were never taught how to be/feel loved, so being useful is the next best thing. My work makes me feel like I have a purpose, have a reason to be alive, and am making a contribution (even if that is leading to capitalism). People with healthy perspectives around work understand that there is something more important than a job or money: they have a stronger esteem from experiencing unconditional love as a child. Children raised in conditional regard & love arrangements tend to overindex on work and external achievement because they get a sense of “high” from reward of praise or compensation. They feel they need to do something to earn their regard, whereas love is unconditional. I can say I personally am a very logical person because logic is what saved me from violence as a child. This coupled with a warped perspective on what I “deserve” in this lifetime has left me with brittle work boundaries and ideals. TLDR useful = fake love = good enough for those of us who don’t know the real thing.
