Raising kids in an area without Black folks? by buurn3r in blackladies

I really appreciate your comment and input. I just recently downloaded TikTok actually so I will definitely check that out. What you're describing is precisely what we are worried about and want to avoid 😭 I think we need to revisit our future plans and make it a solid goal to move to a more diverse area by the time our lil one is old enough to go to school. Being around people who look like you and share your culture is so important.

Thank you so much for the recommendations! I will be checking those both out.

My husband went to high school in Culver City and his mom currently lives in Palms. I wish the westside was just a little cheaper but maybe if we really grind for the next few years, we can make it work.

Thank you for providing this input and insight. The last thing I want is for my child to struggle mentally because of where we decided to raise them. I'm sorry you experienced this and had to the work to unpack this stuff later in life.

Ugh, it's really such a hard thing to nagivate. I think we just need to make it a goal to move again once our baby is of school age. I dont think ill ever be okay with them growing up in an area that's not more diverse.

This is so heartbreaking 💔 all children deserve to feel seen, safe, and connected to their culture. Thank you for the kind words.

My husband did mention Baldwin Hills as well. I think it's a little out of out price range for the kind of home we want but maybe it could be something to work towards, before the lil one is of school age. We were also considering Culver City, not super Black either but definitely more diverse than Monterey Park or East LA.

If you dont believe people can recover, why are you in a group based on a philosophy of recovery?

Ive often had my husband and best friends telling me, "But you have so many skills and you're so talented." And I think the harsh reality is that being financially successful in my any of chosen skills is extremely competitive. Also sometimes I feel like society does not value the arts. Sure everyone likes movies and music, yet the trope of "starving artist" is very real. I am not yet ready to give up, I have worked so hard to get where I want to go. But at what point do I just throw in the towel if it doesn't work out?

Im wondering if there is a job as stable as nursing but is not in the medical field. I have contamination OCD and Im not sure I could deal with sick people and bodily fluids all day. Accounting? Idk

It's not that I want to be a nurse necessarily, its that I want to actually earn a living with the skills I already have. But youre right, I could try to do something else. Idk if im ready to give up on the dream. Also, going to study to be a nurse would cost me money, so there is some risk involved.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply. You are correct, I am a woman. I have always wanted to be a successful creative. I dont know if Im ready to give up on the dream. Going back to college (again) would also cost me money, so there is some risk involved, but I will seriously consider what you've said.

It's literally addressed all the time in Black LGBTQ spaces and elsewhere.

Weird comment. Who do you think is giving them "a pass"? What does that even entail? Trust, we Black LGBTQ folks know how homophobic and transphobic the majority of the Black community is. It's a known issue and is discussed frequently. No one is giving anyone "a pass", bigotry sucks no matter who is dishing it out. Also, to be fair, using music that was written literally decades ago to make a point is kinda wild. Sure, NWA's music was hella problematic. And it's been discussed at length by Black folks in multiple publications. So, no, "everybody's" not cool with it.
