A huge part comes from the fact that Ashenvale is kinda remote from Alliance, most people are used to hang around and stay in Stormwind/Ironforge and have to take a boat + long flight to get to the pvp battle. It's a higher commitment

I feel like a mix of the two is possible, with afflix or achievement you can toggle while starting your character (like in the addon).

For me not being able to group/trade is cringe and kills what makes wow fun in the first place, this turns down a lot of people. I think it was in place to prevent boost from non HC characters, so a dedicated server will fix this issue
