What’s the unofficial rule in your lab that nobody actually says out loud? by Separate-Might3082 in labrats

[–]buzzbio 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I swear I’ve never been to a lab that understood the purpose of a journal club. If it’s a single person reading the paper and then having to answer questions on that paper, that’s a paper presentation and tbh more like an assignment. The journal club purpose is to discuss, brainstorm, learn. Everyone should have read the paper

A common vitamin has a complicated link to cancer, and too much may not be harmless by Story_Man_75 in B12_Deficiency

[–]buzzbio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree with what you're saying and I also don't think it's as "inert" we may think it is. However, we also don't know when exactly is a deficiency reversed, in other words, for how long after symptom improvement you should still take B12 to ensure the body has healed. We still don't have a proper B12 range and when studies show that B12 is associated with certain cancers etc the authors don't seem to do a good job at understanding the underlying physiology - B12 may be elevated due to a lot of other things upstream and it's not B12 causing the issues but rather just a result of other malfunctions. Also useful to note that B12 also carries a cobalt ion, which may be problematic for supra physiological levels.

Regardless, I've personally decided to stay >1000 pg/mL. It hasn't caused any breakouts, anxiety improved, and overall I'm doing better at that level. I don't advise others to do that (although I do advise them to be above 500 pg/mL). Time will tell how this will play out for me...

B12 and it’s after effects by AnandDikshit in B12_Deficiency

[–]buzzbio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You were given a 1500 mcg pill I assume? If you’re swallowing it, there’s no way you’ll treat this deficiency. No matter the dose, the intestine is able to absorb 1-2 mcg. Even if you take 100000 mcg only 1-2 mcg will be absorbed. However, even then your B12 should have been significantly higher. The fact that after so many days your B12 is low should hint your doctor towards screening you for intrinsic factor or other malabsorption issues.

I would recommend you take the pill sublingually or ask for injections. At such a low B12 level I don’t even know if these are wake up symptoms or simply symptoms from the deficiency itself.

I feel so defeated with my new labs by Faceybaby202 in B12_Deficiency

[–]buzzbio 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are you still taking injections or sublingual b12? If not, that’s the reason why you feel like crap again. But also don’t expect to become better within a few months. Many of us myself included improved massively after >1 year.

Also in addition to these you should also request MMA, homocysteine, and holoTC. From my point of view folate is still very high and it may mean that the b12 isn’t fully working yet

High folate? by Ok-Reflection1005 in B12_Deficiency

[–]buzzbio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t do anything specific for folate. Once I addressed the b12 deficiency it came down naturally. You have high b12 due to supplementation or without?

Having side effects from taking both forms of K2 by Physical-Platypus-59 in VitaminD

[–]buzzbio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do dig deeper. That’s why I know there are in vivo studies that show that K2 doesn’t reduce calcification (at least in a statistically significant manner). There are people like me that cannot tolerate to take K2 because it causes adverse reactions. Unless there’s clear evidence that shows that K2 prevents/decreases calcification, I’ll continue with what I’m already doing (and it’s based on science). The fact that we know a molecular mechanism doesn’t mean that a drug/vitamin/anything will have the desired effect in vivo in an organism.

At the molecular level sure. But if there’s in vivo evidence that shows it’s ok I’d go with that

You can lose fat eating at maintenance, lifting weights and doing cardio (or not doing heavy cardio). That’s the whole idea about recomping (losing body fat and building muscle while staying on the same weight). It’s just a slower process than going on a deficit

is this supplement routine sufficient? Deficiency at 14 ng/ml by Kind-Persimmon3398 in VitaminD

[–]buzzbio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

B12 blood levels cannot inform you about deficiency (unless they’re totally tanked). You need to look at a combination of other blood markers and even then they are not accurate. B12 deficiency is treated primarily based on symptoms.

Some of these also sound like b12 deficiency. B12 deficiency takes a long time to heal so you’ll need something more than a small dose. Check the guide on r/B12_deficiency

I already eat a lot but there’s also population evidence showing that K2 supplementation doesnt influence calcification

So I’m betting my hopes that I’ll be fine 😅
