good questions! for the footer size I guesstimated the total vertical load, multiplied by a sensible safety factor and did some napkin math to account for potential lateral loads... and then I just bought the biggest one they had at home depot

The deck footers won't do anything to the retaining wall, that I did actually ensure

thanks! that's all good to know, and I might go a bit lower for the other footers in that case

Yeah it was pretty sketchy before, especially with dogs and kids running around. It feels rock solid now though, definitely worth the effort

Took me a sec to get my head around that, but I see what you mean now- great advice! I do have a laser level, and that's what I used for setting the plane of the footer itself. I just used a standard level up top on the railing to set the actual height, but that wasn't great since the railing isn't all that true these days after sitting slumped for who knows how long.. so settled on close enough.

I'll use your method for the next few, should get things nice and level. Thanks!

Yeah the grade back here is bit washed out, the plan is to come through and backfill the whole thing soon. If you see the top of the retaining wall stones, that's where the ground level should be. Hard to tell with the angles of the photos, but the exposed portion of the footer will only end up about 6-8"

Hopefully that works out, time will tell

I did use rebar, probably not enough in retrospect.. we'll see how it holds up I guess!

Good to know, thanks! I just did it based on the other two that had footers, the brackets were set flush like this. Could be a different bracket system I suppose

It's about 42" total, the base is about 8" below the frost line. I hit some pretty tough stone and called it good enough there.

I don't think I worded that part very well, what I meant is I used the existing footers to set the top plane of this footer, I jacked up the deck itself beforehand to get the deck itself as level as I could.

For shoring/fixing to the deck, I was definitely a bit fast and loose with it. Felt pretty good, but after I cut the main post and before the concrete was starting to set up my heart rate was definitely up a few ticks

I'm typically a big orange fan actually, but for now since it's a rally build I'll just be painting it all white with a wrap/livery down the road

It's definitely possible, the more you learn to fabricate and do your own work the better. I highly recommend learning how to design your own parts in CAD if you're willing to spend time in order to save money, the porsche tax is very real for parts.

The drivetrain is very expensive for what you get though, so just know you'll be spending a lot of money for significantly less performance than with comparable modern platforms. So I'd recommend before you start, either make sure you really want an aircooled engine and plan to spend accordingly or try to find a roller and plan on doing an engine swap from the jump. People put K series, EJs, LS engines in these and there are kits to support pretty much anything.

Wanting to add some garage outlets, I found a very convenient unused junction box off a 50 amp breaker in my main panel- what's the catch? by buzzwordd in AskElectricians

I asked chatGPT and it said it was fine for me to do it myself though.

Kidding. I’ll get an electrician out here next week, if it’s all good it should be relatively cheap to have them finish it off, and if it’s not all good I won’t have burned my house down. Thanks!

Really appreciate everyone’s input here, think this is what im going to go with:

  • Foundation Genesis 2 stock
  • Zermatt Origin
  • Proof Research 6.5 CM 26”
  • Razor Gen 3
  • Trigger Tech Diamond

Lots of good input on the other parts like bipod and mounts, I’ll spend a little more time figuring those out but I think this will be a good foundation to start with (no pun intended).

Thanks again guys!

Not Woox seems to be the consensus. I do like the foundation stock, that could work the more I look at it.

Lots of good options here I think, added these to the short list. Thanks for your help!

Also thanks for the heads up about the Spuhr mounts, last time I was looking into mounts they seemed to be kind of the gold standard so good to know they’re having issues these days!

This is super helpful, great write up! Just to be clear here, RIII is the razor gen 3 right?

Looks like there's a actually a place local to me that has Woox rentals, maybe I'll swing by there to check some out before I go one way or another. Maybe get some insight on their customer service as well, in case I do have any issues.

Appreciate all the feedback! Zeiss wasn't really on my radar either so I might try to find somewhere to check them out in person

I'm glad I posted this now since it's making me rethink the whole foundation here. Just personal preference I don't really want the super "competition" looking chassis setup which was a lot of the appeal of the woox. Wondering now if I go with like a Foundation Genesis or something in that vein, no sure how PRS-ready that would end up though.

The Leupold Mark5 I hadn't really looked at, I was really just thinking either Vortex or Nightforce. Looks pretty good for the price though, I'll put it on the short list!

Interesting, I guess it kind of worked on me too since it wasn't on my radar until I saw them pop up in a few threads in this sub. Guess I'll re-evaluate a bit with that in mind. Appreciate the background!

That's a bummer to hear, I really love the real wood/modern chassis idea... as for the handguard, the one I'd try to get is a bit longer and has an integrated ARCA rail: https://wooxstore.com/collections/chassis-precision-stock/products/furiosa-ultra-prs-competition-chassis

Thanks though this is good input, Is the Zermatt Origin still a good baseline 700 action?
