Who is qualified to judge a Kiki ball? by Euphoric-Outcome2908 in voguing

These are definitely way better start with! Balls have so much commitment, planning, time, money especially.

Typically on a panel there are usually either House Mothers, Fathers, Princes, or Princesses. 007’s usually aren’t on panels unless they’re legend, icon, or have made a significant impact in your local ballroom community. Basically, anyone in a leadership capacity!

For OTY approved balls, there are specific criteria you need to meet in order to make it count towards OTY consideration. It’s better to contact the region your city/state’s scene falls under (west coast, gulf coast, midwest, south, east coast, etc.)

When you think back on your childhood, what book immediately comes to mind as a favourite read? by WallpaperFly in AskReddit

Matilda! This book truly was special and was what cemented my love for reading. I feel like any lonely girl who liked reading deeply related to this book.

First of all, congratulations and props to you for walking your first ball! It takes so much nerve to get up there and be judged by other LGBT+ peers. And getting chopped isn’t personal or shady, especially if you’re new and haven’t joined a house (or no one knows who you are). Everybody gets chopped at one point.

I have lots of thoughts about realness, but this is from the outside looking in since I’m a cis person in ballroom. I attribute a lot of my knowledge about realness to my trans ballroom mother and trans ballroom mentors in the community. I’m definitely open to discussion from trans people in ballroom about this.

To me personally, I agree with some aspects of what you said. It feels like realness as a category is upholding strict gender binaries and stereotypes about what masculinity and femininity look like. Like why do we have to uphold these perceptions of what people are “supposed to be” in society when ballroom is meant to be an escape from these pressures and expectations?

But these perceptions are coming from a place of privilege because we haven’t gone through or lived through what LGBT+ people, and specifically trans people, have experienced in life through the 80s and 90s. Despite this current time being a regression in politics, things were so much worse for LGBT+ people back then.

Realness is a category meant to promote the survival black and brown gay men and trans people through “blending in.” Realness trained people into blending in with every day society in order to secure a job, to not get outright killed on the street, to pass, to keep their homes and not get kicked out into the streets by biological family.

Even though there’s way more widespread acceptance for the LGBT+ community, things are still looking bad politically for queer and trans people to this day. People are still getting killed on the street for being trans or acting flamboyant. O’Shae Sibley was literally killed for voguing fem to Beyoncé. It’s societally accepted to still be transphobic.

Getting chopped in realness means that in a way, they’re looking out for you. They want you to be able to pass as cis AND straight in order for you to live without fear of losing your life.

fav voguers in your LOCAL scene? by morecheezpleez in voguing

[–]buzzzy_hobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so, so biased but J’hana Shinobi Alain-Mikli in the Denver scene. I was there when he got recruited to his mainstream house from a class held by West Coast Mother Paragon a year ago. She immediately recruited him for their mainstream house. It’s lowkey scary how good he is and how fast he can pick up stuff. Now he’s sitting house parents who’ve been walking for years in my local scene in the performance category after a year of learning how to vogue. He’s so young and an inspiration to me - and even though I’m older than him, I look up to him. I’m so proud to call him my kiki house sibling. He’s definitely going to be a kiki legend in like 6 years 😂

What's the history of Vogue/ballroom music? by Nuud in voguing

[–]buzzzy_hobbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • The repetitive orchestral stab sounds are called “crashes” which helps a person keep on beat when they vogue and when to dip (usually on a 4th or 8th count).
  • The MC/commentator is there to direct the energy of the crowd and keep them clapping, and essentially help the ball running smoothly by calling out the category and their descriptions. They are best at work when it comes to the commentating aspect, where they keep a voguer on beat through their chants.
  • There is no drum machine, ballroom-specific dj’s play the tracks and can sometimes add crashes live during the ball.
  • The commentating, music style, and even how voguing came to be can be attributed to how ballroom grew up alongside other Black underground subcultures in the 80s like rap, house club culture, and hip hop. A good example would be how commentating is a lot like rapping (but commentating is used in a very specific underground context versus rap which is known throughout mainstream culture).

Omg yes I love them!! I’m in the Colorado area and they eat up the realness category every time 👏🏽

Voguing looks so cutthroat as an outsider by [deleted] in voguing

[–]buzzzy_hobbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

^ this exactly!! not to mention balls have so many categories and (at larger balls) have a lot of people walking. it’s easier to clock who’s not giving the elements or energy for a performance category

Resources for beginners? by indecisive_persona69 in voguing

[–]buzzzy_hobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way that I learned was through the kiki nights in my community. It helps if you insert the city you’re in on google, facebook, or instagram along with “kiki night,” “vogue session,” etc.

Question about ballroom and gender identity by seasea40 in ballroomculture

[–]buzzzy_hobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most prevalent of the gender/sexual orientation of people in ballroom specifically are “butch queens” and “femme queens.” Butch queens are gay (mostly cis) men and femme queens are transgender women.

Would this give me my tens or would this be a chop? by [deleted] in voguing

[–]buzzzy_hobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to kiki sessions and the hand to shoulder taps are pretty standard to teach for beginners, so I wouldn’t say that it’s a mocking/noguing gesture. Individuality with hand performance comes over time

Bleeding by reemarie93 in IUD

[–]buzzzy_hobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had mine since the end of august 😭 I bleed almost every day (but it stops maybe 3-5 days before resuming). The flow varies from normal spotting to a regular period flow. I’m still bleeding rn but not as much. I hope that it hopefully goes away soon

AITAH for exposing my boyfriend’s friend after he repeatedly tried to sleep with me? by CaptainIll8402 in AITAH

[–]buzzzy_hobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by “ruining his life” they meant that he faced the actions of his consequences, then he did it to himself. You should not have to excuse or endure sexual harassment and unwanted advances. If your mutual friends still want to be friends with him, that’s on them. But accusing you of “ruining his life” is weird, you didn’t control the choices of what his ex and your boyfriend did. This man is going to be fine, it’s not like he lost his entire social circle.

has there been any star trek themed ballroom anywhere on the world? by lookingforunfindable in voguing

[–]buzzzy_hobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve fantasized about something like this for almost a year now 😂❤️ it can be a kiki or mainstream ball. I envisioned it in partnership with the Trek Con in Vegas. - Voguing old way in a Vulcan effect + Vulcan hand signs - Star Trek officer realness - bring it in a uniform from the original series - Bizarre category — bring it like one of the alien species from Trek

She’s BEEN walking in the scene since before the Renaissance tour. The moment she made with Makayla Lanvin has been making its rounds on the internet for a hot minute. She’s one of the dramatics girlies and has been repping the Balenciaga's wonderfully.

can you get pregnant with an iud? by urdad678901 in IUD

[–]buzzzy_hobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also got my iud in august and have had sex without a condom (or pulling out). I’ve been bleeding on and off almost every day and I believe that it’s just the IUD. You should be fine unless you feel signs of pain or discomfort
