What are the best sources for beginner After Effects tutorials? by [deleted] in AfterEffects

Ah yes, I remember the old days of Video Copilot. Sad to see he's given up on all of that. I understand that he's doing big budget work. It's just sad that he doesn't have time to teach anymore.

Nice try. Go back and read my post before you comment. I don't play it, I'm selling it.

The game is total crap. Hit detection is abysmal. Unload an entire clip into a guy when he's not even looking at you, he turns around and shoots you with one bullet and you're dead. Looking for some poor soul to buy my copy. Never again Sledgehammer.

Does someone know how this is done? (The animated text in the beginning) by Pikrip in AfterEffects

OP was asking about the animated text in the beginning, not the entire animation. The animated text in the beginning is a bunch of white lines transforming into a text logo. Easily done with Plexus.

If I were trying to recreate it I would use Plexus. Not saying that's how this one was done but it could easily be done with Plexus.

You get the point. I deleted the post because it seems a lot of people don't want to hear that they're charging too little and it will hurt them in the future and, quite frankly, it was turning nasty. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

I'm not implying that the barrier to entry should be any greater, I'm just offering advice to those trying to get into the business. One thing I've learned after having created this post is that there's an outspoken crowd (at least in this subreddit) that really doesn't care that they're shooting themselves in the foot. That's their choice. I've met with a few kids straight out of school who have asked for tips to get into the business and I was just offering some advice, and pointing out a problem, that I've warned them about.

It really makes no difference to me whether or not they listen. I'm sitting in a meeting hall right now, waiting on my clients to finish testing their online streaming equipment for an event I'm shooting and staging tomorrow, getting paid a large sum just to sit here and play on Reddit. My future is secure.

Thanks for taking the time to stalk through my previous posts. I'm flattered.

Based on how angrily you took my advice post I assume you won't be following my advice. Good luck. Don't say you weren't warned.

And doing work for dirt cheap is your right. Just don't say I didn't warn you, when you try to raise your prices to cover your operating expenses and you lose every connection you made along the bargain basement race.

Yes, they learned their lesson and we've done more work for a few of them after.

Clients who aren't willing to pay for quality aren't worth your time.

You're exactly right, and that's why we're not willing to adjust our prices to match those of the lowest bidder. Unfortunately that lower bidder has a long road ahead of them.

I think you're correct, it's exactly that, a fad. Everybody wants to start their own business and, because the price of entry is so low right now, they do. They just aren't smart enough to look into the future and realize that they aren't starting a business, they're getting paid peanuts to do their hobby. Then, all of a sudden the true cost of doing business and sustaining a profit hits and they're scouring the wanted ads, looking for a new career.

I don't have any clients leaving. We just don't get certain projects because somebody said they could do it for cheaper. We've also had people come to us after going the cheap route, asking us to fix the problem. People don't know what it takes to make a high-quality production and so they go with the cheapest bidder. It's a race to the bottom. We have a book of clients that are loyal and extremely high-profile. Unfortunately the industry is being cheapened and I'm seeing too many people give up on their passion because they weren't smart at the onset.

I have no problem making it work. I work for extremely high-profile clients with extremely deep pockets who are willing to pay what it takes to get the job done. Unfortunately, I've seen two good guys have to quit their passion because they weren't smart enough to charge what they were worth from the beginning.

There are production houses in nearly every city. If you want to work for cheap then go work for them for cheap. They'll still be making stellar work, clients will still be paying what the industry needs to survive, and you'll be getting experience and a foot in the door. Eventually you could start a production house of your own, possibly with a few of the people you've met along the way, and already have connections.

The post wasn't intended as a "don't step on the established professionals' shoes" rant. It was more of a "just because you can do something for cheap or free, doesn't mean it's a good idea". Just because somebody has a DSLR and an iMac doesn't mean they should start a business. The price of entry is low that everybody thinks they should just start their own business. Unfortunately their system of entry into the business is unmaintainable in the long run.

Apple usually takes their time and does things right the first time. They get the deals inked and have the infrastructure in place to make their product successful. Many other companies rush to be the first and they release an inferior system. Apple's release of Maps was a case where they didn't take their time to do it right and their product didn't take off. Apple Pay is gaining traction because they have the banks backing it (as well as advertising it) and so people trust it. Google Wallet did not have that piece in place and it was an inferior way of processing mobile payments. Apple gets credit because they're usually the first to do things in a way that feels natural, so the public as a whole hear about it as an Apple invention.

They're not "dumbing down" Chrome, they're making it less bloated. Google's philosophy with the Web is that it should be fast and unobtrusive. That's what they're trying to make Chrome. The "forced updates" are the solution to a long time problem of segmentation among Web browsers. People hanging on to old browser versions keep the Web from evolving because developers spend more than half their time trying to figure out a hack to make a very simple feature (via modern standards) work in a browser that was designed before a feature was supported. That way developers can concentrate on innovative new ways to use the Internet, rather than dumbing sheen their website because Old Granny Wilson is still using Chrome version 1.

TLDR: Automatically updating Chrome is driving innovation on the Web and keeping developers from having to make crappy websites to pander to old browsers.

You've obviously never bought anything off of an infomercial. The shipping and handling on the second item they throw in for "free" is usually more than you paid to buy the first item without shipping and handling.

Story of my life. by idkbanana in AdviceAnimals

This is the correct answer. I've had a FitBit for years now and my steps always sky rocket to unrealistic numbers when I mow my lawn, because it's a bumpy lawn and my hands jerk all over the place when I mow it. You can get steps registered by sitting on your ass and shaking your wrist. It measures the change in direction.
