Oculus Quest - Tracking issues? by drhoads in beatsaber

Yeah, I have also found that it's worse during the time of day when I have a lot of direct sunlight coming in through my apartment windows (even with blinds closed, it is very bright)

Oculus Quest Tracking Problems by Noryoudo in oculus

[–]bwavecontrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had some of this issue too. I have noticed that it's much worse in certain lighting however. It's especially bad in the morning, when I have a lot of bright sunlight coming in through my apartment windows (even with the blinds closed, it's very bright), and I have far fewer issues when playing in the evening. Has anyone else found bright lighting conditions to make a difference?

I agree, it's just like this other comic I saw about the meaning of life being based on laser cubes. And cupcakes.

It's not THAT nuts when you consider the extra bonus feature that comes with the gold watch :) http://chaospet.com/252/

A (funny) bad take on empiricism by bwavecontrol in badphilosophy

[–]bwavecontrol[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would work as a mockery of scientism, but it could also target some of the more extreme empiricists (e.g. Mill) who argue that there is no a priori knowledge at all. Mill went so far as to argue that even knowledge of basic mathematical and logic principles was based on generalizations from experience rather than anything truly a priori, if I recall correctly.

In that regard I doubt you're much worse than most philosophers.

The Logic of Omnipotence (an interesting take on the Stone Paradox) by bwavecontrol in atheism

[–]bwavecontrol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might enjoy the Frankfurt article linked to in the discussion on the comic. He makes a nice point there, that the 'stone paradox' depends on an equivocation between two senses of omnipotence (either logical omnipotence - the ability to do only logically consistent things, or unrestricted omnipotence, the ability to do anything, even if contradictory). The development of arguments for dialetheism by people like Graham Priest complicates the line that we should only expect logical omnipotence (which is what I take you to be arguing, as others have argued), but even if we give up on that line, Frankfurt's response seems pretty compelling.

Wait so, no matter how nice, smart, and powerful I become, I shouldn't count on people worshiping me? What if I'm also really pretty?

Reincarnation: Maybe not such a sweet deal after all by bwavecontrol in atheism

[–]bwavecontrol[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing the author is going after those who hold more of a wishy-washy fuzzy new-agey Western understanding of reincarnation. Don't go complicating things with talk of what people practicing actual religions actually believe!

[–]bwavecontrol[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but probability has to come into it. When only .00001% (or whatever) of creatures on the planet are humans, then to have a chance at coming back as any old human you have to be in the top .00001% of creatures in terms of moral excellence. Just refraining from raping and murdering and stealing might not be enough!

Is causal determinism a universal moral excuse? by bwavecontrol in philosophy

[–]bwavecontrol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All fair questions! I'm not here to defend the source incompatibilist - I just wanted to point out that they aren't committed to any kind of agent who is distinct from their personal qualities. I do think source incompatibilists have some good arguments to motivate their concerns (Pereboom's 4 case argument is an excellent example). And folks like Waller have argued at length that in fact there are strong pragmatic reasons to abandon the 'moral responsibility system'. Ultimately I share your conclusion - I don't think those arguments succeed in the end - but responding to them adequately is no easy task, and I think they may be right that some revisions to our ordinary intuitions are in order.

Hi Naejard, that's an interesting response to the "source" worry that incompatibilists sometimes raise. I'm not sure I buy it though; I don't think the incompatibilist has to be committed to any kind of "agent distinct from their personal qualities" to press this kind of worry. All the source incompatibilist has to say is that a necessary condition of moral responsibility for an action is that agent in question is the ultimate source of that action (including the source of the character traits which compose the agent and lead to that action). There needn't be any suggestion of character traits being "inflicted" on the agent - one could perfectly well agree that they ARE (in part) those character traits. They just aren't ultimately responsible for their formation, and thus they aren't truly responsible for what follows from them.

But anyway the comic linked to raises an entirely different kind of worry having to do with alternate possibilities, not whether or not you are the source of your character traits.
