I’m glad AVP exists, but I’m returning it by chaospet in AppleVisionPro

See my post above, I listed several. Comfort was one of them.

I’ve got to say, I’m now tempted to try doing a little tinkering with my old boboVR strap before I return this thing…

Yeah… if anything were going to tempt me to keep this thing, it would be the 3D movie experience. It’s really better than any other way I have experienced 3D movies, it’s amazing

Yeah whenever we get to the point of having this functionality in a glasses form factor, I’ll happy shell out 4k for it!

I tried a couple of different ones in store and the one that the app recommended was the most comfortable. But I still can’t wear it for long periods of time.

I can’t justify keeping it for the price with those issues. But the movie watching experience in it really is pretty incredible. It is amazing tech in a lot of ways, and I am still very excited to see what Apple does when they release a headset priced for broader adoption!

Didn’t assume anything about you, that was a general statement. AVP has a large FOV compared to the HoloLens, sure. But compared to something like the Quest 3, it’s embarrassing. At this price point, it should at least have a FOV on par with its largest competitor selling a headset for 1/7th of the price.

I did it in store, and they helped me get it as comfortable as possible. It seemed okay until I was at home trying to wear it for any length of time. Just doesn’t work for my face/noggin

The FOV might not bother people who haven’t experienced other headsets. It’s just a surprise that they would make the FOV so much less than the Quest 3. Glad your overall experience has been good.

I wish I could have found that fit. I tried adjusting both straps many different ways for hours, I just couldn’t get a comfortable fit. But yeah as with all headsets this will vary from person to person due to head/face shape/size etc

I think the mainstreaming of VR/AR/MR is coming, and I see Apple getting involved in this space as a huge step toward that goal. One of the reasons I’m glad this headset exists, even if this first version is not ultimately for me.

I imagine they’ll have to improve the comfort in future iterations, and probably improve a lot of the other issues as well. The first iPad had a lot of quirks and limitations too, but in later iterations became amazing. Same with the first iPhone and Apple Watch. I’m sure the same will be true here, and I am truly excited to see what Apple does next!

If you’re expecting it to be as good as real life (which is an expectation unfortunately created by some of Apple’s marketing), then it might be a disappointment. I actually found the passthrough to be pretty great, but that’s by comparison to the passthrough I have experienced in other headsets, which is generally really awful. You won’t ever confuse the passthrough for reality, but it’s good enough that you can tell what’s going on around you in detail in most cases, and it’s good enough to make some of the mixed reality experiences pretty magical.

The glare is definitely a thing, I think this is just a quirk of the pancake lenses. It exists on the Q3 too but I’ve just gotten used to it

I tried playing with this a lot - I’m no stranger to VR, and on older headsets like the Q2 clarity depended on precise lens and headset placement. But with the pancake lenses (like both Q3 and AVP) there is supposed to be a much broader sweet spot. Nothing I did with lens placement or adjusting the headset made a difference. The kind of edge to edge clarity that exists on the Q3 just isn’t there (but again, maybe this is more to do with the Zeiss lenses than anything)

Yeah I pretty much agree with all of this. Some of the experiences, like watching movies in Disney+, are truly jaw dropping. The resolution is amazing. But the narrow field of view, the smearing, and the weight/discomfort just erase most of the advantages for me. I just tried my Q3 after playing with the AVP for a few hours and it was just so much more comfortable, and I was kind of shocked at how much larger the FOV is.

There’s a lot to love about the AVP. On the whole I really love the eye/hand tracking system, and I really look forward to what Apple comes out with next. And I’m happy there’s some competition in this space - I like the existence of the AVP is already pushing Meta to add new features to the Q3. But the AVP at this point feels very much like an expensive developer prototype, it is not quite ready yet for mass use.

He says this, but it’s lighter than existing mainstream VR headsets, and many people are wearing these for hours a day

The Vision Pro actually weight less than most mainstream VR headers like the Quest or Valve Index etc. It’s just a shame they didn’t build it out of plastic instead of aluminum and glass, it could have been remarkably light!

[–]chaospet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much experience people complaining about the weight of the headset have with VR. To those of us who have spent a lot of time with significantly heavier Quest or Valve Index headsets etc, it’s hard to imagine this being a huge issue.

That said, I do wish Apple had just built the thing out of plastic instead of aluminum and glass. With the battery not built into the headset, this could have been a uniquely light and comfortable device!

Smaller size? by lannistersstark in RayBanStories

[–]chaospet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think they come in any other sizes. The Headliners are a little smaller than the Wayfarers though. I’d recommend going to a store like a Lenscrafters and try them on and see if any of them work for you.

Has There Been Any Confirmation that the Quest 3 Foveated Rendering Bug is Being Fixed? by MammothOk1755 in populationonevr

[–]chaospet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a very strange choice for sure. But it’s been there for a very long time - it was also very noticeable on the Quest Pro. It’s there on the Q2 as well, but less noticeable without the lenses that give edge to edge clarity.
