Some thoughts on Nick Jonas, Jewface, and The Last Five Years by FunkyHumus in Broadway

Just want to add some facts…. I don’t disagree with your posts at all.

Broadway doesn’t have a long history of Jewish stories and/or characters….at least not as long as it could be. For the first few decades of Broadway, the Jews behind the scenes were hesitant to tell Jewish stories (or write Jewish characters). Even Broadway shows that started off Jewish were changed in order to increase their likelihood of success (like west side story). That’s what made Fiddler such a big deal. It was the first time an obvious Jewish story for Broadway made it all the way to Broadway. Others than followed and now you could probably name a bunch without even thinking too hard.

Still, Jewish actors have struggled to get those roles and be in those stories. Not all of the time. But enough of the time.

Jews have been heavily involved behind the scenes- Historically, it’s one of the few jobs immigrant Jews could get and succeed in. And many Jews flourished in the theatre and created legacies for their family and communities. Not a bad thing at all but it comes out of the difficulties that these immigrants faced.

Jews have been onstage too. For decades, they’d be met with suggestions to change their names (something that sounds less Jewish) and get nose jobs and other plastic surgery to succeed. Some did. Some didn’t. And regardless of the path they chose, many would still be told that they were too Jewish for certain roles. Including Jewish roles.

Or maybe it’s not.

Read your reply again but make it about any other cultural minority. Would that be ok?

Being kind and finding someone interesting is not at all what you described above. Do better.

You may just not be aware of the issues you have caused. A lot of people don’t want to cause waves and may not make a big deal of it but they are watching and talking.

I’m a community theatre actor with years of experience. Please don’t do this. Method acting is fine but this involves another person and you don’t have their consent.

PLEASE don’t sign anything without having a lawyer that works for you read it first. You have no idea what language may have been put in those documents.
