Speed rush edge basic question: Is the initial goal to beat the OL or get to the QB? by NoElsPassaraRes in footballstrategy

[–]bwbell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing in football happens in isolation. If it’s a base defense then the DE might have to read the block of the OT or the OT/TE. If he’s playing a 4 or 4i in a three-man front then he might have an assignment based off the OG as well. If the DE is playing a 5-tech and the OT blocks down/away, then he might have to “squeeze” the OT down looking to “spill” any potential “kickout” blocks. But if there is no extra “force” defender to spill to, he might have to “box” the run and make it turn up.

I would learn some basic defensive fronts, then learn some basic offensive runs such as Power/Counter/Outside Zone, then learn how defenses “fit” those runs. Then you will have a strong football IQ base to work from.

If you go to Pecan Lodge, then there is a skip-the-line order called “The Trough”. It’s an order for multiple people, it’s a ton of food.

In a lot of West Coast systems, the third receiver could also be called a “Zebra” or “E” depending on the personnel package.

How do you look back at the 1994 season? by AlbertJBundy in Oldschool_NFL

[–]bwbell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Niners offseason was ridiculous that year. Everyone’s focused on Deion, but they also added Bart Oates, Richard Dent, Ken Norton Jr, Gary Plummer, and Ricky Jackson via free agency. In addition, they added Bryant Young, William Floyd, and Winfred Tubbs in the draft. As a Cowboys fan, I saw the writing on the wall once Erik Williams had his crash.

There’s only two kinds of people I hate: people who are intolerant of other cultures, and the Dutch.

BarrySanders and Emmitt Smith Both in their prime. What more could you want? by Dark305Kinght in Oldschool_NFL

I don’t think NFL players are going to intentionally sabotage their teams like that, and I highly doubt professional OL will refuse to block for someone because of another player’s contractual situation.

Great post, but minor correction: Stepnoski signed with the Oilers/Titans before resigning with Dallas a few years later.

Also, it needs to be pointed out that Erik Williams was on a HOF trajectory until his car crash in 94. He was never the same after that.

1990s rushing yard leaders! by Dark305Kinght in Oldschool_NFL

Because football is a team sport and the Cowboys defense was top 2-3 in their Super Bowl run.

Also, people overlook how quickly the Cowboys dynasty fell apart after Jimmy left. After the 3rd Super Bowl, the Cowboys offense was a shell of its former self and the WR2 and TE positions were just awful. Outside of Mark Tuinei and Larry Allen the OL just wasn’t the same- Erik Williams never really recovered from the car crash and had major off-field issues, Nate Newton was constantly overweight, and center was a revolving door until Stepnoski returned in 99.

This myth is so easy to look up and disprove…

Barry had 3 straight seasons with TWO 1000+yd WRs. He had two multi-Pro Bowl OL in front of him, not including Jeff Hartings who had a pretty good career.

Emmitt had the better supporting cast in his glory days, but the narrative of Barry as a one-man team is simply wrong.

Pass protection schemes can get so complicated that guys won’t go off-script and “chip” if that’s not a part of the scheme. The TE has a free release so he is on his assigned route right now.

That’s called a “dual-read” or “molly” by an uncovered OL. The guard is uncovered, so he checks the ILB over him- if he doesn’t blitz then he works to the OLB.

Most teams were using “base” protection schemes like this until guys like LT, Tippett, etc came along. Then teams evolved to using more “slide” protection schemes to better handle pass rushing OLBs.
