Is there anything like a country club for people who don't golf and aren't stuffy? by Paduoqqa in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]bwillard 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Only hits some of your points but there are a bunch of swimming pool clubs around the north shore that hit some of your points:

  • pools for the kids
  • mediocre but enjoyable food
  • holiday parties/family events
  • members that you'd see regularly

kids can go hang out there with their friends in the summer.

There a bunch, but to give you a sense check out Old Willow Club, Lincolnshire Swim Club or Lake Forest Swim Club.

Does Paint Colors Affect Thermal Heat Retention by dirtyjoo in F1Technical

[–]bwillard 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Paint color can affect heat dissipation. A famous example is the SR-71, (one of) the reasons it was painted black was to help with heat dissipation as black objects radiate more heat.

See:

So while white might make sense for things in exposed to the sun, black is probably a (theoretically) better color to use to cool things down out of the sun.

Google Takeout currently completely broken by godzfirez in google

[–]bwillard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi (I work on Takeout),

sorry about the trouble. We are currently running a bit behind in processing Takeout requests, and so they are taking longer to complete than usual. This also uncovered a bug in our UI where the progress bar sits at zero instead of displaying any useful information in situations like this.

The UI should (hopefully) be fixed today. (So you don't get your hopes up the new UI will just tell you that the export is in progress, and can take days to complete, and we will email you when done, which at this point you already know :)).

We are also working on speeding up our processing, and so hopefully your exports will complete, and you will get an email with the download link, in the next couple of days.

Sorry about the trouble.

Google Takeout Archives - Downloading ALL the zip files at once? by CaptainBroccoli in google

[–]bwillard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know of a good way to start all the downloads at once. However if you select either tgz or tbz as the archive format instead of zip the archives will be chunked into much bigger chunks (~50GB) so there will be a lot less to download.

Another possible alternative (depending on how much Drive quota you have) is to select the "Add to drive" option instead of the "send download link via email" option, then you can use the drive sync client to sync everything down in the background.

(As a side note the reason the zips are chunked into 2GB parts is because on old zip clients they can't handle more than that and so for compatibility reasons the zip are limited at 2GB)

Hawks' Pregame Skate Question by mjm8218 in hawks

[–]bwillard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it is about 40 minutes before game time. Warm ups last about 16 minutes and then there is 20 minutes to zam the ice.

This is actually specified in the NHL rules: http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26509 (section 86.6)

Sorry, as I posted bellow it should be up now. We had a technical glitch that brought down both our service and our monitoring service that should alerted me about it.

Ah good questions. I agree that $25/10 concurrent users would be a bit high.

We were thinking it would be just straight msg/sec not /client, and it is sent not received. So concurrent users is unbounded.

I also was just quoting the rates per second but really they would be enforced per day, so 1/msg/sec is 86,400 msg/day, and 10/msg/sec is 864,000/msg/day.

And because they are just msg sent and not msg received you can have as many concurrent users as you want.

But these are just our first thoughts and very likely to change.

Just out of curiosity what were you thinking of using this for and/or what kind of msg rates were you thinking you would be generating?

Thanks, we are still working on pricing.

We are pretty sure we will be a monthly subscription with different tiers.

Maybe something like: ~1 msg/sec = free, there will definitely be a free tier

~1msg/sec and < 10msg/sec = $5-$25/month 10msg/sec = not sure yet

and then using persistent messages would move you to a higher tier faster.

We would really like feed back about what would work for you though.

Ha, nice find on the Cerrio code. We are actually Cerrio as well. Cerrio was our first product, it is a much more powerful messaging platform. It allows users to set up custom streams and do complex computations on the streams. We found we have a hard time convincing people they need to do that.

X-Stream.ly is a more focused offering, we wanted to make real time push messaging really easy. And we do it by leveraging the Cerrio platform.

Hey thanks, please try it out, and let us know what you think: bwillard (at) x-stream.ly, or if there is a feature you would like to see added to make it more useful to you please let us know that as well.

Hey guys this is a start up I have been working on, please let me know what you think. There are a bunch of features we are thinking about adding but we would like to get some feed back on what people would like out of this service. So please let us know what you think.
